  • Largest Nicotine Trade Show in U.S. Gets Bigger

Largest Nicotine Trade Show in U.S. Gets Bigger

The year’s first and largest trade show, the Total Products Expo, continues to broaden its reach.

    By VV Staff

This year’s Total Products Expo (TPE) was the largest show yet. Nearly 570 exhibitors were visited by an estimated 14,000 visitors. Held from Jan. 30 through Feb. 2 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, TPE 2024 increased its show floor by 27 percent, and many vendors said that sales through the end of Thursday (with one day remaining) had already surpassed sales from the last few years.

TPE is often a launching point for new products. Several brands had numerous different types of product debuts during the show, including some not-so-new innovations for disposable products. Spaceman, for example, showcased its latest product, the Spaceman Prism 20K. The new disposable device offers a 1.77-inch smart screen that provides more intuitive information, including displays for e-liquid and battery levels and the current mode in use. The three-mode switch offers consumers a more personalized and customized vaping experience.

“Technologically, electronic devices are becoming more interactive with diverse features, and they are accommodating larger tank capacities based on consumer demands,” according to Maryna Gudym, business development manager with Wingle Electronics Group, a consulting company focused on innovative products. “Disposable devices amalgamate the best features from previous pod mod and box mod devices, showcasing a revival of old technology trends in a new form factor.”

Many products presented at TPE followed the growing trend of merging of e-cigarette and oil vaporizer platforms, e.g., universal pod system for oil and nicotine replacement pods by BO Vape USA. There are two main methods of merging electronic device platforms: 1) within own brand: develop universal battery supporting different consumables and 2) cross-support: develop a universal battery with adaptors to fit competitor consumables (pods, 510 carts). Both methods were on display during TPE 2024.

The vaping industry is witnessing innovations in device construction and extended features that enhance user convenience and experience, according to Gudym. Examples include devices with touch screens, large color displays, dual mesh coils and unique features like vibration feedback and magnetic connections, allowing users to customize flavor combinations.

Disposable pods are becoming increasingly sophisticated, integrating innovations such as rapid charging and new smarter technologies such as dual mesh coils. The innovations make it possible to design devices with a larger capacity and improve the taste. “This trend indicates a movement toward better quality and functionality in market offerings,” Gudym said.

Chapo Extrax, a cannabis company, is expanding its market horizons by releasing a vape in partnership with Blue Lotus extract, a nicotine-free and THC-free product popular among DIY vape enthusiasts but rare in prefilled vape products, according to Gudym.

There is also notable interest in alternative substances, such as ephedra-powered energy shots, kratom shots and kratom pouches, signaling the market’s exploration of new, modern ways to meet consumer needs with low or absent psychoactive impact. Additionally, the market is expanding beyond traditional vapes to include branching out into other tobacco segments with products like electronic hookahs. Several China-based companies are studying the demand for hookah and shisha tobacco and are offering new developments within the product segment.

Vaping, particularly the disposable pods market, shows a strong trend toward improving product quality and expanding the product range to meet growing consumer demands and preferences. Several products had LED displays, several power output modes, new coil designs, larger liquid capacities, etc. Interestingly, Hangsen, a China-based e-liquid supplier, stated that the current bestselling e-liquid flavors in the U.S. vape market are Mint Candy, Raspberry Ice Cream, Watermelon Ice, Strawberry Kiwi, Blue Razz Lemonade and Tangerine Blackcurrant, according to Wingle Group.

In manufacturing, most of the represented China-based factories are slowly switching to free-flow tank designs, which provide better e-liquid utilization and better flavor release but at the same time increase requirements for tank sealing and urge to install heater-liquid separation mechanisms or novel e-liquid supply designs.

Smoore announced it partnered with two new U.S. vape brands, Fasta (Reazen Tech Limited) and Aroma King’s Boss Bar. Smoore promoted its nonrechargeable devices with Power Alpha battery technology (nonrechargeable chemistry LiMnO2 3.0 volts). The batteries are supplied by EVE Energy. Power Alpha is a charge-free solution for large-puff disposable devices that solves issues disposable vape users face, including short battery life, charging inconvenience, fading flavor and a burning taste after recharging.

FEELM, a vaping industry leader in closed-system products and a subsidiary of Smoore, launched the first charge-free disposable vaping system. The Power Alpha 2.0 solves the problem of needing repeated charging in the large puff vapes currently popular on the market. FEELM started developing the charge-free battery technology to empower large-puff vapes as early as 2022. The previous version of the company’s original Power Alpha technology could only support 6,000 puffs without charging.

Also, during the show, Chemular, a leading provider of regulatory and compliance solutions to the tobacco, nicotine and medical device industry, announced a strategic partnership with IGEN, developers of a widely used platform designed to navigate compliance and reporting requirements in heavily regulated industries, according to Wingle Group. The two entities are creating a new “compliance as a service” platform focused on streamlining the burden of compliance for small-sized to medium-sized companies who need turnkey solutions for the Prevent All Cigarette Trafficking Act, excise tax reporting and registration services.

“The time and effort required to stay compliant with federal, state and local laws is increasingly burdensome for small-[sized] to mid-sized companies in regulated categories,” said Jason Carignan, chief commercial officer of Chemular. “Except for larger players, most companies don’t have a dedicated compliance officer who can ensure every regulatory detail is addressed so their products can stay on the market—especially in industries like ours, where the rules change rapidly. Chemular, now powered by the IGEN backbone, will be able to significantly scale its turnkey compliance service offering to a growing portfolio of tobacco manufacturers and distributors.”

A cool new concept that launched during TPE 2024 came from Fresor when the company unveiled its Fresor NOVA Technology and its latest disposable, Fresor N10000. It is the first large-capacity transparent disposable vape. Consumers will no longer “face uncertainty about the remaining e-liquid levels,” according to a Fresor representative.

Total Product Expo 2025 will take place Jan. 29–31, 2025, at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

  • World Tobacco Middle East 2023 Sees Vape Boost

World Tobacco Middle East 2023 Sees Vape Boost

The vaping industry had a larger impact at this year’s World Tobacco Middle East trade show.

Dubai has a reputation for embracing modern technology, and the vaping industry is no exception. The World Tobacco Middle East Dubai 2023 (WTME) trade show, while dominated by traditional tobacco companies, had a limited number of vapor manufacturers offering the latest mods, tanks, coils and other vaping accessories. There were several heated-tobacco companies represented, and the e-hookah category also increased its presence.

The vaping industry doesn’t have a large presence at WTME. That is mainly due to the World Vape Dubai exhibition’s (June 12–14, 2024) growing presence and popularity in the region. Including heated-tobacco products, the electronic nicotine-delivery system segment only makes up about 10 percent of the more than 250 exhibitors. However, that is nearly double the vaping industry’s presence at last year’s WT Dubai trade show.

WTME, held Nov. 27–28, is the largest exhibition of the tobacco industry in the region. The event features the latest trends, innovations and products from the global nicotine industry. The exhibition is also accompanied by conferences where experts and industry leaders share their knowledge and experience.

This year, more than 5,700 tobacco professionals from more than 60 countries attended WTME, the show’s organizer, Quartz Business Media, states on its website. Quartz has more than 30 years of experience in supporting the tobacco industry. The company owns and operates a network of the world’s largest nicotine-related conferences and exhibitions, including World Tobacco Events, World Shisha and World Vape Show Dubai.

According to Wingle Group Electronics, a data resource firm, there were several new products from the e-hookah, vapor and heat-not-burn segments at WTME 2023. Some of those highlights include:

    Vapor

    ● Shenzhen Yunxi Technology Co. showcased its new pod system, the Uwoo Binastar 5000 cartopod.

    ● Legacy Tobacco Brand International showcased new vapes under the My Bar brand: the My Bar Extra 15K disposable with a display and the My Bar Extra 18K with LED indicators of e-liquid and battery levels.

    ● Hanwha Group together with Ard Filter released the Neon Doublor pod system, a new cig-a-like product that utilizes a filter tip with a capsule.

    ● A new e-cigarette brand, Yozo, was launched. Currently, its portfolio includes three disposable models: Yozo 800, Yozo 3500 and Yozo 7500. The products were introduced in the Pakistani market in November.

    ● Vaprize introduced several new disposable models: Vaprize T18 2500 Crystal, Vaprize GM01 8000 (with a display), Vaprize VP Flat 8000 (with a display), Vaprize Type TE6000 and Vaprize 3500.

    E-hookah

    ● Chongqing Xiying Technology Co. showcased the TT Tiger Laser Shisha and TT Tiger E-Heater V8 e-hookahs. The company’s catalog also included a pod-based electronic hookah similar to the one offered by the OOKA brand.

    Heated tobacco

    ● Shenzhen Ruigu Technology Co. showcased its product portfolio and promoted the upcoming Hitaste E5 induction heating system.

    ● Gulbahar Tobacco International launched a new heat-not-burn brand, Milano.

    ● Nioo Technology Co. promoted the new IQOS Iluma-compatible tobacco sticks Heaco with an induction recipient inside the stick.

    ● BroadFar presented its new product, the Nmate Air 3.0 heating system with convection heat transfer. BroadFar is also promoting OEM of Nuso heated sticks through Legacy Tobacco Brand International. The manufacturing facility is in Indonesia.

    ● Heechi Tech presented its line of Heeсhi heated sticks designed exclusively for Heechi devices with convection heating (the company currently has several models under development).

    ● Yunnan Tobacco International showcased Ashima heated sticks. The product is promoted together with a new heating system, MyChoice.

    ● The Shenzhen Imiracle Technology Co. booth exhibited the Rejo HS40 and Rejo TS40 heating systems.

    ● Shenzhen Yunxi Technology Co. promoted the Uwoo EM induction heating system and Heabal herbal sticks.

    ● GOAT Lab, together with iRod, showcased UGare heated sticks, Joy iCod tobacco heated sticks and the iRod X3 heating system (by Smoore).

    ● COO v2 heated sticks were presented together with the MOK FWRD heating system. The device features a lock/unlock feature and a digital built-in accelerometer.

    ● Metex showcased several of its heating systems: Metex Polar, Metex PE (conduction heating system compatible with TEREA and SENTIA heated sticks; peripheral heating), Metex Arch (conduction heating technology with 2 zone peripheral heater) and Metex Phoenix.

    ● P.T. Jinjia NGP Indonesia promoted Mofee sticks for induction heating.

    ● Acmefog Commerce (Korea) promoted the Zeles M2 induction heating system with a blade-shaped susceptor, shutter mechanism, which protects the stick slot from dust and damage, and IPX5 water resistant rating (claimed), Zeles infrared heating system prototype (currently under development), CTOM ZL heated sticks, Kuanzhai heated sticks and Zelex heated sticks.

According to WTME attendees, the trade show has helped to redefine industry standards, set new trends and shape practices in the tobacco industry. The gathering is not just about showcasing products; it’s a dynamic exchange of ideas and a catalyst for transformation.

One of the best attributes of WTME is that the show is a place where the old meets the new, where innovation meets tradition and where discussions take place that will influence the strategies, policies and very essence of the tobacco industry, stated Maryna Gudym, business development manager for Wingle Group, in her report.

“Almost all booths had promoters who invited visitors to taste their products or get additional information about the services they provide,” said Gudym. “World Tobacco Middle East Dubai is a great opportunity for professionals to meet, establish business connections and learn about new opportunities.”

Following communication received from Panama, the host country of COP10 and MOP3, and in consultation with the Bureaus of the Conference of the Parties to the FCTC and of the Meeting of the Parties to the Protocol, the dates for the resumed in-person sessions of COP10 and MOP3 have now been set as follows:

    • Resumed COP10: Feb. 5-10, 2024
    • Resumed MOP3: Feb 12-15, 2024
  • Oct. 11: Netflix to Debut Documentary on Juul Labs

Oct. 11: Netflix to Debut Documentary on Juul Labs

The Netflix documentary Big Vape: The Rise and Fall of Juul will premiere on Oct. 11. Netflix states the docuseries is “a scrappy electronic cigarette startup becomes a multibillion-dollar company until an epidemic causes its success to go up in smoke.”

Helen Redmond of Filter wrote that she was prepared to hate-watch the docuseries, directed by R.J. Cutler, in her review of the show.

“The name alone pissed me off because of its implied conflation of Juul, which is not a tobacco company, with ‘Big Tobacco.’ The trailer is a feverish montage of talking heads and voiceover accusing the company of being ‘wildly irresponsible,’ photos of hospitalized patients with bloody chest tubes, and a clip of James Monsees, one of Juul’s founders, being called ‘a marketer of poison to young people’ at a congressional hearing,” she wrote.

She also states that she “was happily shocked” when the series presented a alternate viewpoint.

The docuseries is based on TIME journalist Jaime Ducharme’s book, Big Vape: The Incendiary Rise of Juul.

  • FEELM Highlights OS Vape During Intertabac 2023

FEELM Highlights OS Vape During Intertabac 2023

The latest in vaping industry innovations made its debut during InterTabac 2023, held from September 14-16, as FEELM, a leading closed system solution provider, unveiled its OS Vape in a partnership with OS.

It is the first time FEELM has co-exhibited with its local partner during the world’s largest nicotine and tobacco trade show held in Dortmund, Germany.

OS, a major player in Germany’s shisha product market, recently ventured into the disposable vaping product market.

A representative from the FEELM booth said that collaborating with clients for exhibitions is a new strategy aimed at bolstering the client’s brand presence in local markets.

The FEELM spokesperson said the company intends to continue its co-exhibition format at major global exhibitions, joining forces with clients from various regions in a collective march towards a global presence.

OS Vape introduced a disposable vaping solution that delivers an elevated puff count, cost-efficiency, and unmatched vapor consistency, promising German consumers a rich vaping experience reminiscent of their cherished beers.

The OS Vape uses FEELM Max ceramic coil technology, disposable product the ability to provide 800+ puffs, a more than 30% enhancement in puff count compared to other common disposable products.

This establishes a new standard under TPD compliance, according to the FEELM spokesperson.

“Beyond puff count, OS Vape offers an exceptional vapor and taste consistency of over 95%. These groundbreaking advancements have undoubtedly propelled the vaping industry to new zeniths,” the spokesperson said. “Additionally, the signature transparent e-liquid tank not only alleviates e-liquid concerns but also adds a touch of aesthetic sophistication.”

  • Korea Vape Show 2023

    Korea Vape Show 2023

The market share of open pod systems on the Korean market is much higher than in other regions.

    By VV staff report

Korea Vape Show 2023 (KOVAS) is the best launching point for entering the Korean market, according to a Wingle Group report of the show. Wingle is a Hong Kong-based business platform company founded in 2010 that facilitates mutually beneficial cooperation between consumer electronics, healthcare and e-consumer companies.

KOVAS is a vaping business exhibition that connects domestic and overseas distribution buyers and companies from more than 20 countries. The dynamic event exhibits the latest technologies from the vape industry, and more than 50 companies were given the opportunity to promote their products to more than 15,000 visitors. KOVAS was held in late July at the Korea International Exhibition Center, commonly known as KINTEX, located in Ilsanseo-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea.

Listed below are 10 takeaways from the Wingle report:

    1. The Haka brand showcased its Haka Q (Metex Melux) heated-tobacco system with Bluetooth connectivity for consumption tracking. Haka also promoted its new disposable e-cigarette Haka S, Haka Glow with the FEELM Max ceramic heater. Haka is completely powered by Shenzhen Smoore Technology.
    2. Aspire launched its prefilled pod system Gotek S. The next planned market is the U.K. The company also showcased its new Peboo pod mod.
    3. Geekvape presented the Geekvape & PAX Vape pod mod with VPU technology for an improved vapor performance.
    4. Daddy’s Vapor promoted the Pyro 6000 disposable powered by Smoore’s Topower battery solution, which claims to have 30 percent more capacity compared to mainstream batteries with the battery size remaining unchanged.
    5. Korean wholesaler Dragon Vapes promoted Uwell’s upcoming releases: Valyrian Air, Valyrian Pro and Valyrian Max pod systems.
    6. Pura presented two new products: Pura Legend pod system and the Pura MyBox 5000 disposable.
    7. Smok showcased its new Spaceman SP7000 disposable with battery and e-liquid indicators.
    8. Innokin launched Klypse Mecha and Innobar R2 open pod systems.
    9. Several new high-capacity disposables with a display were highlighted: Vapengin Nimmbox 8500, Orca Air 7500, Yooz BC8000, Mosmo VD8500, Mosmo SO7500, Mosmo Jucy Punk II 7000, Oukitel Aqua 12000, Oukitel 9000, Sanyeah C290 5000, Firerose IN7500 and Nasty DX 8.5i.
    10. There were also several new compact-size pod systems: Aspire GoTEK Pro, Smoant Levin, Pura Legend, Viento Magnum, Innokin Klypse Mecha, Innokin Klypse Zip, Innokin Innobar R2, Rincoe Jellybox V1, Rincoe Jellybox V2 and Rincoe Jellybox V3.

Most of the presented and marketed devices at KOVAS have futuristic electromechanical designs with transparent bodies, according to the Wingle report, which also detected a trend toward making pod systems less expensive. Additionally, the market share of open pod systems on the Korean market is much higher than in other regions.

Heat-not-burn players on the Korean market include Smoore (Haka Korea), Shenzhen SMY (Pluscig, Morex) and Shenzhen Yunxi Smart (UWOO), according to Wingle. Smoore, the world’s largest atomization company, seemed to also attempt to generate new leads and establish new relationships for the expansion of its FEELM-powered devices. Disposable vaping products had a strong presence, and the segment continues to grow globally.

KOVAS 2023 was a success, according to Wingle. That may be due to South Korea’s next-generation tobacco market showing a booming trend in recent years, according to data from Euromonitor. The country’s heated-tobacco market was valued at KRW2 trillion in 2021 and is expected to reach nearly 2.5 trillion won by 2025. And according to a survey by the South Korean Ministry of Strategy and Finance, the share of the entire tobacco market held by the e-cigarette segment in Korea rose from 2.2 percent in 2017 to 14.8 percent in the first half of 2022.
