ICCPP, the parent company of Voopoo, has launched its first ceramic core technology brand, Gene Tree.

According to ICCPP, the new core addresses shortcomings of existing ceramic core products, which tend to suffer from light taste, sticking powder and burning coils. Such issues, says the company, affect not only the user experience but also pose a threat to consumers’ health.

Developing the new generation of ceramic core products involved more than 1,000 days of technical explorations and scientific experiments. In addition, it took tens of thousands of hours to choose the best solution from more than 2,000 sets of ceramic core material formulations.

ICCPP’s research and development team comprises more than 300 people, including more than 40 holding either doctoral or master’s degrees. In addition solving the problem of ceramic coils’ powder sticking and dropping, ICCPP managed to turn its R&D results into a solution fit for mass production.

In a blind test among more than 3,000+ vapers, participants indicated they favored the taste of Gene Tree over that of competing products.

According to ICCP, ceramic cores on the market generally have poor “taste reduction.” To compensate, companies traditionally have increased the amount of nicotine—but this isn’t an option for disposable vapor product sold in countries that limit nicotine concentrations.

According to ICCPP, 20 mg of nicotine salt in liquid vaporized with Gene Tree can achieve the same result as 30 mg of nicotine salt used in a competing product. Weighing about 0.07 g, Gene Tree’s volume is also 50 percent smaller than existing ceramic cores.

ICCP says the Gene Tree ceramic core is made of environmentally friendly mineral materials.

Philip Morris International has launched IQOS Iluma, the brand’s first tobacco-heating system based on induction-heating technology, in Japan.

The device’s Smartcore induction system heats the tobacco from within the new Terea Smartcore Stick. These newly designed sticks are to be used only with IQOS Iluma, which features an auto-start function that detects when the Terea stick is inserted and automatically turns on the device.

According to PMI, the bladeless IQOS devices offer a cleaner way to heat tobacco from the core without burning it. They also provide a more consistent experience and leave no tobacco residue, eliminating the need to clean the device. Additionally, the devices generate no combustion and no smoke. PMI says its market research indicates that IQOS Iluma provides a more pleasurable experience compared to previous IQOS generations.

“IQOS Iluma is our most innovative offering to date and the new flagship in our portfolio of science-backed, smoke-free products. Its breakthrough induction-heating technology heats tobacco from within, without burning, so there’s no smoke, no ash and, like previous IQOS devices, it emits, on average, 95 percent lower levels of harmful chemicals compared with cigarettes,” said Michele Cattoni, vice president of heated-tobacco platforms at PMI, in a statement.

“However, unlike our previous tobacco-heating systems, IQOS Iluma has no blade. That means no tobacco residue or cleaning—ever. With this, and other product features, we aim to address consumer pain points that may have hindered some adult smokers from beginning or maintaining their journey away from cigarettes in the past.”

IQOS Iluma is available in two versions—IQOS Iluma Prime and IQOS Iluma. Both devices use new induction-heating technology but offer different designs. IQOS Iluma Prime and IQOS Iluma are available in Japan for pre-order on IQOS.com beginning Aug. 17, 2021, and for purchase at IQOS stores on Aug. 18, 2021.

As of June 30, 2021, PMI’s smoke-free products are available in 67 markets. The company has stated its ambition to be present in 100 markets with its smoke-free products by 2025. There are more than 20 million users of the IQOS tobacco-heating system globally, and PMI estimates that more than 73 percent (approximately 14.7 million) of these men and women have switched completely to IQOS and stopped smoking with the balance in various stages of switching. PMI’s ambition is that by 2025, at least 40 million PMI cigarette smokers who would otherwise continue to smoke will have switched to smoke-free products. Furthermore, the company’s ambition is that more than half of its net revenues will come from smoke-free products by 2025.

  • HCMC to Receive Patent For Enclosed Vape Cartridge

HCMC to Receive Patent For Enclosed Vape Cartridge

A new patent will be issued tomorrow to Healthier Choices Management Corp. (HCMC) for a e-cigarette cartridge. U.S. Patent No. 11,064,732, Electronic Vaporizer Cartridge with Encased Heat Source, encompasses novel HCMC technology directed at a vaporizer cartridge with internal components encased in a non-reactive material such as quartz, ceramic or the like.

    Credit: Olivier le Moal

The design avoids a potentially toxic reaction between e-liquid, cannabis or CBD oils, or other substances, and the heated metal components of the cartridge. The patent grant expands HCMC’s portfolio of patent assets that promote a healthier way to vape, according to a press release.

“The issuance of this patent is significant in our attempts to make vaping safer. Essentially, this patent is technologically the reverse process of our previously issued patents for our Q-Cup technology,” said Jeff Holman, CEO of HCMC. “Studies have shown that liquids and oils can act as solvents when they sit in direct contact with a metal coil, thereby leeching out heavy metals which can then be ingested during the vaping process. This breakthrough technology has the potential to completely eliminate this problem.”

The design is similar to how a light bulb works. A light bulb has a metal filament inside, but a consumer can only touch the outer glass, which gets hot from the heat of the filament. Similarly, the metal coil being encased in a quartz “bulb” prevents the liquid or oil from coming in direct contact with, or “touching” the metal coil, according to the release. The metal coil heats the quartz, the substance is in contact with the heated quartz, and the vapor is produced without the substance ever touching the metal coil directly.

“While there have been several advances in vape cartridges through the years, most of them have focused on what I will call ‘bells and whistles,’ like controlling device functions from an app. As a result, some of the best vaping cartridges on the market, for both e-liquid and cannabis oil, still have an antiquated exposed metal coil and wicking system at their cores,” explained Holman. “[HCMC] is now exploring our options with regards to producing and distributing these bulb cartridges, or partnering with existing manufacturers that would benefit from providing a potentially groundbreaking and safer cartridge to their customers.”

CPSC Sends Warning on Repackaged 18650 Batteries

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has warned that consumers should not buy or use 18650 lithium-ion battery cells — used in some vaping products, flashlights and toys — due to a possible fire and even death risk.

The Commission said it is working with e-commerce sites like ‘eBay’ to remove listings of loose or repackaged “18650 lithium-ion” batteries, according to a press release. A superior court in California recently denied a request by Samsung to dismiss a lawsuit about an exploding e-cigarette lithium-ion batteries.

The market does have single 18650 batteries that are intended for use in consumer products. The CPSC warning is about batteries separated from cells that use multiple 18650s such as battery packs for electric automobiles.

“These cells are manufactured as industrial component parts of battery packs and are not intended for individual sale to consumers. However, they are being separated, rewrapped and sold as new consumer batteries, typically on the Internet,” the CPSC said in a statement on Saturday. “Specifically these battery cells may have exposed metal positive and negative terminals that can short-circuit when they come into contact with metal objects such as keys or loose change in a pocket.”

Once shorted, loose cells could overheat and experience thermal runaway, igniting the cell’s internal materials and forcibly expelling burning contents, resulting in fires, explosions, serious injuries and even death.

“Unfortunately a growing number of small consumer products such as vaping devices, personal fans, headlamps and some toys are using loose 18650s as a power source,” the CPSC stated in the release.

  • RELX Program Nets $700,000 in Counterfeit Products

RELX Program Nets $700,000 in Counterfeit Products

    Credit: RELX

RELX Technology has helped Chinese authorities seize over 70,000 counterfeit e-cigarette products in June and July, 2020 through the company’s Golden Shield Program. The street market value of the products seized is estimated to be worth over $700,000.

It is understood that the products were intended to be sold in a number of markets around the world, including Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia and China, according to a press release. Following the rise in the production of counterfeit vapor products and e-liquids, RELX established the Golden Shield Program in August 2019 to help prevent the production and sale of the illicit goods.

Members of RELX’s Golden Shield Program are working with online social media platforms, online e-commerce platforms, China’s Administration for Industry and Commerce, and local authorities throughout China to eliminate counterfeit vaping products from the market.

To date, RELX’s Golden Shield Program has aided authorities in 26 cases related to the production and sale of counterfeit vaping products, leading to the seizure of hundreds of thousands of counterfeit vapor devices, e-liquids, and other merchandise, the release states.

RELX’s R&D facility has performed a series of tests on the counterfeit devices and pods. The lab found that illicit compatible pods often use inferior e-liquids; contain harmful substances like toluene at levels that greatly exceed normal standards; and the nicotine content does not match what is labelled on the packaging. This explains why the compatible pods are often sold at a much lower price.

RELX has also found that fake RELX devices engraved with luxury brand logos, or co-branded devices, are also being sold on different social media networks like Facebook and Instagram. The fake engraved devices are similar to compatible pods in that they are produced in factories with no certification.

The products are not only a serious violation of RELX’s intellectual property, they are also a safety hazard, as their batteries are not properly tested. There have already been a number of cases where the battery of a fake engraved device has exploded.

Chen Changlu, Deputy General Manager at Amperex Technology Limited, a leading Chinese battery manufacturer, stated in an interview that lithium is a very active element.

“If not managed properly, it can easily lead to an item catching fire or even exploding. Developing safe designs is essential when using lithium batteries, but the market has many different players,” said Chen. “Some manufacturers remove the safety protection device or use inferior materials, creating a potential safety hazard. Please refrain from purchasing any products from unregulated manufacturers and only purchase products from legitimate manufacturers on official channels.”

RELX customers should only buy products from authorized channels and use QR code scanners on their phone to verify the authenticity of RELX products, according to the release. For more information on how to authenticate RELX products, customers can visit: https://relxnow.com/pages/verify.

  • Japan Tobacco to Launch Ploom S 2.0

Japan Tobacco to Launch Ploom S 2.0

Japan Tobacco (JT) is rolling out its Ploom S 2.0, an upgraded heated-tobacco device specialized for menthol. In addition, JT will launch two new menthol tobacco stick products under the Camel brand—Camel Menthol Red and Camel Menthol Yellow. These products will gradually be available at convenience stores and select tobacco retail stores across Japan beginning July 2, 2020.

Ploom S 2.0 is equipped with a new heating mode that lengthens the duration of the peak heating temperature compared to that of the current Ploom S. According to JT, this allows for a balance among the freshness of menthol, rich vapor and clear tobacco taste.

“The two biggest factors that influence the flavor of T-Vapor products are heating temperature and its duration,” explained Toru Takahashi, vice president of the marketing group product and brand division for reduced-risk products.

“Ploom S 2.0 is capable of tailoring the device to heat the sticks at an optimal temperature and for an optimal duration with respect to the different stages from the first inhalation to the last rather than heating at a steady temperature,” he said. “This is the key to delivering the best flavor in T-Vapor products.”

  • PMI Gets ‘Brexit-Proof’ Patent Protection for IQOS

PMI Gets ‘Brexit-Proof’ Patent Protection for IQOS

    Credit: iQOS

Last week, a London judge granted Philip Morris International (PMI) an injunction prohibiting a Chinese competitor from putting an alleged “knock-off” of its smokeless tobacco-delivery device on the market in the U.K. because of European design protections.

As part of his ruling, High Court Judge Anthony Mann granted the tobacco giant’s request for default judgment in the case since defendants Shenzhen Shunbao Technology Co. Ltd. had not participated in the proceedings. He also granted Philip Morris’ request to extend the intellectual property protections the company currently has for its product under a European Union registered community design so it will remain in effect in the U.K. after Britain leaves the bloc, according to information on law360.com.

“I have satisfied myself that all of the relief included in the order, including the references to various Brexit matters, are forms of relief for which the claimants would be entitled, had they fully proved everything that they had pleaded in their particulars of claim,” Judge Mann said at the conclusion of a video conference hearing.

The smoking device dispute wafts back to November 2018 when Phillip Morris first sued Shenzhen for infringement of its registered design. The product design is for a “smoke-free alternative to cigarettes,” according to Philip Morris, which markets the device under the trademark name IQOS, according to law360. The tobacco-delivery system includes tobacco “sticks and a rechargeable holder that heats up, the registered design relating specifically to that device.”

Phillip Morris filed its claim in the U.K. shortly after discovering the rival company had created a “cheap knock-off” smokeless product called AMO, that was already being marketed in China, according to its written arguments to the court.

No representative of Shenzhen was present at Monday’s hearing. “It is a straightforward case where the defendant has simply refused to engage with the proceedings,” Philip Morris told the court in its filing. Monday marked the second hearing Philip Morris had over its bid for a final injunction. A different judge determined in February that the tobacco company could serve Shenzhen and several individual company representatives by email.

Philip Morris lawyer James Abrahams said his client was unable to deliver documents related to the proceedings to one individual, a Cherry Zhou, as the email sent was “kicked back” and she later informed Philip Morris’ Chinese legal representatives that she had left Shenzhen.

The injunction granted by Judge Mann on Monday prohibits the Chinese competitor from marketing its infringing product. The order would also allow Philip Morris to pursue any profits Shenzhen made with its device in the U.K., although its written argument notes that “it does not currently appear proportionate to pursue an inquiry for damages or an account of profit.” The written filing also notes that a registered community design is seen as an EU right, so it currently only has effect in the U.K. pursuant to the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement. That will end in the U.K., “as things stand, at the end of the transitional period at the end of this year,” the filing says.

And while a provision of the withdrawal agreement currently provides that at the end of the transition period, holders of registered designs “will enjoy an equivalent U.K. registered design,” Philip Morris asked for — and the court granted — permission to come back to the court if there are any unexpected changes to that as Brexit unfolds.

“We do not know for certain how the law will change at the end of the transition period and the parties ought to be able to apply to the court to deal with such changes,” Philip Morris stated. In a written statement, Philip Morris’ counsel at Bird & Bird LLP emphasized that the injunction will continue to protect the design after Brexit.

“The order granted suggests that the courts are ready and willing to grant Brexit-proof orders where needed,” the law firm said. “This will be a relief to litigants seeking as much certainty as possible with regard to the post-transition period arrangements.”
Philip Morris is on the other end of infringement litigation over its IQOS system in the U.S. R.J.
Reynolds Tobacco Co. is calling on the U.S. International Trade Commission to probe Philip Morris’ tobacco vaping product imports, claiming the tobacco heating system infringes patents covering R.J. Reynolds’ vaporizers.
