    Essential Reliability: Vaporesso’s Gen Max

The best aspect of Vaporesso’s Gen Max vaping system is that it’s reliable, affordable and simple.

    By Mike Huml

The Gen Max is Vaporesso’s latest high-power, dual-battery mod offering that leans heavily into the old school billet box aesthetic while packing in a lot of modern features. The kit also includes the Vaporesso iTank T subohm tank to complete the package. The Gen Max is a powerhouse of unique features and another testament to the quality that Vaporesso is known for. But can a billet box, albeit a fancy one, compete in today’s vaping market?

The Gen Max is a lightweight aluminum box mod that’s powered by dual 18650 batteries in series for a maximum output of 220 watts. It technically uses single-button operation, but that button doubles as a dial for making adjustments and navigating the menu. A physical toggle switch below the primary button can lock the Gen Max to prevent accidental misfiring.

The battery door is completely removable and is held in place securely with magnets, and although the batteries can be removed for charging, they can also be charged internally via an included USB type-C cable. The screen is located on the side opposite of the battery door and is housed within a round window to give the screen a unique porthole-like look. The 510 connection is centered at the top of the mod and looks best with tanks or atomizers with up to a 24 mm diameter. All in all, it’s a very straightforward and minimalistic design, if a bit safe.gen max vaporesso

The iTank T is standard subohm tank fare, and that’s intended in the best possible way. It’s top-filling with top-down airflow, which completely eliminates leaking and gurgling and makes filling the tank very simple. The top cap is opened by pressing against the red arrow symbol to slide the cap to the side, revealing the fill port. The port is large and partially covered by silicone flaps to reduce messiness while also allowing for pressure to be released when filling.

The bottom cap of the tank unscrews to provide access to the coil, which is removed by simply pulling it out of the tank. Naturally, a new coil is then pressed in and the bottom cap replaced. By default, a bubble glass tank section is installed, which holds 6 mL of e-liquid, but a normal glass tank section is also included that allows the tank to hold 2 mL of liquid. Between the Gen Max mod and the iTank T, the Gen Max kit is a powerful yet simple setup with the potential for mass appeal. However, it’s a mixed bag with a few pain points that really hold it back.

Visually, the Gen Max is clearly crafted to high-quality standards, but billet box mods were never necessarily known for their looks. The centered 510 connection tends to look top-heavy, particularly when paired with large tanks such as the iTank T. An RDA might look more proportional, but even then, many RDAs and tanks these days have a diameter of 25 mm, and anything past 24 mm will cause overhang with the Gen Max mod, including the 24.5 mm iTank T.

That’s right—the tank that’s included with the kit overhangs the mod, even though the base of the tank tapers down to this diameter. It’s not so much that the tank is too big—it’s just not a perfect fit for the mod. Granted, the mod is relatively small, but a better tank option should have been included with the kit.

The tank itself is wonderful. It’s easy to use, quick to set up and vapes like a dream. Vapor is easily produced, and the flavor is mouth-filling with zero break-in time. One slight gripe is the difficulty of removing the coil. It’s a bit more recessed than some similar tanks and might require the use of fingernails to remove. Luckily, Vaporesso’s GTi mesh coils are long-lasting and don’t require frequent replacement.

Aside from that, everything else is fantastic, the airflow in particular. Not only does the iTank T allow for a wide range of airflow options with its smooth-turning airflow ring, but the airflow is incredibly smooth. Almost no turbulence can be detected, and the airflow is very quiet, although this can depend on the airflow setting. It’s a shame as there is simply no way around the fact that it looks goofy atop the Gen Max.

Speaking of the mod, it also can’t escape from a few odd quirks. First the positives—it uses two 18650 batteries, which are readily available and are the de facto standard for high-power mods. Every vaper has these laying around, and they’re reliable workhorses. The Gen Max is very lightweight and is a top contender for something portable for those no-compromise vapers out there.Vaporesso gen max

The battery door has a bit of wiggle room, but no movement can be detected during normal use. The magnets that hold the door onto the mod are very strong, but the door is still removed easily enough thanks to a small groove at the bottom. Additionally, the screen is incredibly vivid—one of the best on the market to date—and the faux-porthole look is indeed eye-catching. Two curved LEDs on either side of the screen, along the edge of the porthole, really sell the effect. At the end of the day, however, it’s still a vertically oriented rectangular screen.

Due to the single-button and dial operation, navigating the menu is very easy. Three clicks of the button will bring up the menu options where the user can select from different themes, change the vaping mode, adjust the brightness and toggle Smart mode. However, the dial also inherently carries some downsides, chief of which is the accidental adjusting of the output power.

The dial is a bit on the loose side and small, and inadvertent adjustments are common while the device is being fired, and there is no way to lock the power output while still allowing the device to fire. What’s more, the output power cannot be changed unless the screen is active. That means if the user wanted to change the power output, they would need to fire the device for a split second before they can do so. And it can’t be ignored that the Gen Max is yet another mod with two separate ways to lock the device and no way to lock the output power alone.

Pressing the fire button five times in quick succession will turn the mod on or off while moving the toggle switch underneath the fire button will lock the device—virtually the same thing as turning it off. This oversight is even more egregious when it comes to the Gen Max because, as mentioned, the dial system is more vulnerable to accidental changes to the power output compared to standard three-button mods.

The screen is very colorful and crystal clear. It displays the remaining battery life of each individual battery, the output power, the mode, whether the Gen Max is locked or not, atomizer resistance, and a puff counter or puff length. There’s also an animated graphic according to which theme is selected that changes once the device is fired. For example, when using the UFO theme, it blasts off once a drag is taken.

Three clicks of the fire button will enter into the menu. Once inside, themes can be changed to the user’s liking, but it’s not very customizable and, frankly, seemingly arbitrary. The three themes are default blue, a soccer theme (called “Football” within the menu) that’s orange and a UFO theme that’s purple. The user cannot choose colors and graphics independently, which means if someone wants an orange color scheme with a UFO graphic on the screen, they are out of luck.

What do soccer and UFOs have to do with vaping? No clue—it’s completely arbitrary, even random. There is a setting titled “LED,” which one would think changes the color of the curved LEDs lining the porthole, but all it does is allow those lights to be disabled. It’s a missed opportunity as the screen does look great and so much more could have been done creatively here.Vaporesso Gen Max

The output modes are also strange. The Gen Max features four total modes: F(t) mode, which is the default; Pulse mode; Eco mode; and VV mode. VV mode is variable voltage—a little antiquated, but fine. Eco mode is the standard variable wattage mode that most people go for and also provides the longest battery life. Then there are F(t) mode and Pulse mode, which are virtually the same, for all intents and purposes.

In theory, these act like temperature control modes to prevent overheating and burning of the coil. To quote the user manual:

“F(t) mode is by adjusting temperature, heating speed and time. F(t) mode releases the flavors of e-liquid adequately, delivering the perfect balanced tasting experience consistently from the first puff throughout.”

“Pulse mode is a mode to improve vaping experience through constant voltage output, delivering optimal flavor production, throat hit, nicotine satisfaction and perfect temperature cloud continuously.”

    [Sic]s all around.

There are a few ironic buzzwords throughout these descriptions, namely: “consistently,” “constant” and “continuously.” They’re ironic because in practice, they introduce the worst part of temperature control, which is when the power suddenly cuts out in order to prevent burning. It’s the same sensation as when the battery dies mid-puff—it’s jarring.

It’s also the opposite of “consistent” or “continuous.” At lower power output settings, these modes feel exactly the same as Eco mode. At higher settings, power cutoff starts being introduced. In addition, when set to F(t) mode or Pulse mode, there is no way to adjust the temperature, only the wattage, and based on the descriptions in the user manual, it’s unclear what these modes actually do.

In practice, the Gen Max is strictly a variable wattage device. F(t) and Pulse modes are too niche, and even with the user manual, it’s hard to find a situation where these modes would offer an advantage over Eco mode. VV mode is simply obsolete and inferior to variable wattage in most usage scenarios. It’s not the end of the world, as most users opt to use variable wattage on any given mod anyway—it’s just yet another missed opportunity.

One last setting that doesn’t quite find a purpose is Smart mode, which can be toggled on or off in the menu. When used with Vaporesso’s GTi coils, Smart mode will automatically set the “optimal” power output. However, this only happens at the moment an atomizer is attached. For example, with Smart mode activated and a 0.2 ohm coil installed with the iTank T, the Gen Max automatically sets itself to 70 watts when the tank is attached.

That’s it. The power can still be adjusted from there via the dial, just as it could with Smart mode turned off. It may be called “Smart,” but more goes into an optimal power output than just the resistance. Airflow and user preference are arguably much bigger factors and ones that the mod can’t account for. Again, another missed opportunity and added bloat to the menu system.

The Gen Max should have embraced either the simplicity mindset or added more useful features. Instead, it sits in the middle with a simple menu system that’s easy to use but with no settings that are really worth changing. The button/dial is unique and gives the Gen Max a reason to have a button this big, harkening back to the billet box design aesthetic. Unfortunately, with no way to lock the dial (but two ways to lock the device) and no way to adjust the power output until the screen is activated, it seems like a gimmick rather than a well-thought-out feature. And that pretty much sums up the Gen Max in its entirety.

There are a lot of good concepts that were never really fleshed out, almost like Vaporesso had too many chips and had to figure out a way to use them. The Gen Max could have had true temperature control as an option, power curves, more themes that could have been chosen independently of the color scheme, more color schemes, and a physical switch that locked the power output while still allowing the device to fire, and it would have been a home run.

Instead, we have a good-looking mod that appeals to nostalgia but ends up being just a run-of-the-mill variable wattage device. If that sounds harsh, it’s because there are so many mods that do try to push the envelope and offer something unique that when a mod that’s only OK comes around, it ends up standing out for all the wrong reasons.

The Vaporesso Gen Max is not a bad device by any means in the sense that it’s well made and it puts electricity through a coil, consistently, when the button is pressed, and that’s really what matters most. It also has a really nice screen and the start of a good idea with the graphic animations and porthole design. More customization would go a long way, possibly with a future firmware update. On the plus side, the mod and the tank together retail for about 60 dollars, which is very competitive.

Batteries are not included, and with a little more space optimization, the Gen Max could have been powered by 21700 batteries instead of 18650s, giving it another avenue of appeal. As it stands, the best things the Gen Max has going for it are that it’s reliable, affordable and simple, which are not bad things. With a little more refinement and thought put into the functionality, the next Gen Max could truly be something great.

    Flonq META: Vaping Under Control

Flonq introduces its solution to address the lack of ability to control nicotine consumption.

    Contributed

A range of studies suggests that e-cigarettes can be an effective tool for helping conventional tobacco smokers quit. However, once individuals switch from tobacco smoking to e-cigarettes, there is no clear baseline for before and after comparison, since most users are unable to track how frequently they vape. Vape companies and manufacturers should propose solutions as part of their responsibilities. How can this be achieved? Alfabet Labs, the company behind the Flonq brand, offers its perspective on this issue.

One of the most recent studies on the effectiveness of electronic cigarettes as a smoking cessation tool was conducted by the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. The report concluded that there is high-certainty evidence that nicotine e-cigarettes are more effective than other methods, such as nicotine-replacement therapy—like patches or gum.

However, the goal after switching to e-cigarettes is to control, decrease or quit nicotine consumption. This presents a challenge, as it’s hard to accurately measure e-cigarette use to control nicotine intake. The main issue is figuring how to measure usage intensity, given the wide range of products and user behaviors.

So what should be the basis for comparing the consumption dynamic after switching to e-cigarettes? Should industry professionals measure the number of times an e-cigarette is used per day, the number of puffs taken, or the volume of e-liquid consumed? A consensus on measurement standards has yet to be established.

    Vaping vs. cigarettes

The Eurobarometer study, which revealed key trends in smoking behavior in the EU, clearly illustrates the issue of accurate vape measurement. According to the report, the average daily consumption of tobacco was slightly higher than 14 units.

The data also reveals insights into e-cigarette usage. Among smokers who use e-cigarettes, the range resulted to be the following: 60 percent reported using them less than 10 times per day, 28 percent less than 20 times and approximately 11 percent over 21 times. A similar pattern was observed among ex-smokers who used e-cigarettes.

However, what is particularly important is that nearly half of the respondents reported being unsure about their previous daily usage of e-cigarettes. This uncertainty among former smokers about their past usage highlights the need for more research in this area.

    Measuring consumption

The Nicotine & Tobacco Research journal conducted a study asking young adults who vape to provide suggestions for improving the scientific measurement of vaping.

Participants reported that they don’t actively monitor the number of puffs they take during a vaping session or over the course of a day. One participant remarked, “I would never count how many [puffs] I take.”

Additionally, several respondents noted that it is challenging for them to estimate how many times they vape during the day. They also expressed uncertainty about the amount of nicotine they consume per session. One participant said: “I wish that I could measure how much I’m [vaping]. I have no idea how much nicotine I’m taking in … I’m probably taking in more than a pack [of cigarettes] a day.”

Another respondent added, “No one can count how many times or how many hits in an hour. It’s pretty subconscious.”

It’s clear that using vapes to quit smoking or manage nicotine dependence won’t be effective without devices that include features for monitoring consumption. Whether it tracks the number of puffs, daily usage or other patterns, the device should provide a comparison point for the user.

    Practical solutions

The Flonq vaping brand recently introduced its solution to address the lack of controlling the nicotine consumption in the industry. The brand presented META by Flonq—an advanced pod system designed for tracking and managing nicotine use. The device features a wide range of features that respond to the market demand for consumption transparency.

    • The real-time tracking system

The device monitors data such as the number of puffs, usage time and nicotine index level, all displayed on a single touch screen. The device collects data throughout the entire period of vape usage.

    • META Smart AI assistant

The integrated AI assistant helps to analyze nicotine usage patterns. With built-in behavioral therapy techniques, META is designed to offer personalized guidance.

    • Nicotine index

A key highlight of the device is the nicotine index developed by Flonq, which measures estimated nicotine saturation and determines the optimal timing for the next puff. It updates in real time, allowing users to follow a suggested plan to reduce nicotine intake or quit smoking.

“Whether you want to vape, reduce your nicotine intake or move toward a smoke-free life, the choice is yours,” says Marlen Nazarov, Flonq’s founder and CEO. “Our company’s focus is to respect your decision to vape while encouraging mindful choices.”

Overall, it seems that META offers consumers a straightforward and user-friendly way to track their nicotine usage—something the market needs to implement right away. This can be achieved through smart technologies such as integration with mobile apps, Bluetooth connectivity and alerts to notify users of excessive consumption. As the industry evolves and expands, these efforts will be essential in helping users manage their nicotine intake, make positive changes to their health and, what’s also important—to improve the industry’s overall image.

  • Flonq Ultra Provides the Ultimate Outlook

Flonq Ultra Provides the Ultimate Outlook

The Flonq Ultra stands on its own as a high-quality disposable vaping system.

    By Mike Huml

It would be easy to say that the Flonq Ultra is simply a variation of the Flonq Max Pro and call it a day. After all, they share many of the same features—e-liquid and battery capacity, a screen, USB type-C charging, and so forth. However, that wouldn’t be at all fair to a device that by all rights stands on its own and in every case above the rest. As a disposable device, the Ultra combines simplicity and quality in a concise package that any vaper can appreciate.

The Flonq Ultra features a modest, yet adequate, 650 mAh battery, which is charged via a USB type-C port located on the bottom of the device. It holds 18 mL of e-liquid, which should last for about 20,000 puffs before running dry. Airflow comes from two pinholes next to the charging port, which provides an extremely smooth, quiet and nonturbulent draw.

The Ultra is slightly less bulky than the Max Pro, being a bit flatter and symmetrical. As such, the only two ways to set the device down are either on the face where the screen is located or on the opposite side. Despite that, leaking and spitback are never a problem.

The screen and button are located on the front face of the Ultra, and the screen displays the remaining battery life and e-liquid as labeled rotary icons. As each segment fades away, it naturally indicates the level of battery or liquid depletion. The screen also shows a rocket ship icon that’s white in normal mode and red while in burst mode.

Burst mode increases the power output and allows for quicker drags more akin to an analog cigarette while normal mode caters to the standard mouth-to-lung vaping style of taking slower, longer drags. As such, burst mode won’t necessarily deplete the battery or liquid reservoir faster than normal mode unless long drags are taken.

The back face of the device, opposite the screen, has a small latch for a lanyard. For those willing to forego any semblance of fashion, the Ultra can be hung around the neck or wrist to make it easily accessible and less likely to be dropped or lost.

While the screen and mouthpiece are made of glossy, hard plastic, the majority of the device is a matte, rubberized texture. Normally, this would lend itself to dirt accumulation, but unlike many other devices that combine colored hard and rubberized plastic, which accentuates the contrast in dirtiness, most wear and tear will be unnoticeable given the uniformity of the materials used. This also arguably makes the device less slippery and more comfortable to hold.

Flonq offers 25 flavors in nicotine strengths of 5 percent, 2 percent and 0 percent—no nicotine. That’s a great variety, especially considering that many vapers are looking to taper down their nicotine consumption, and a surprising number of disposable devices simply don’t offer that option and are only available at high concentrations.

The flavors available are varied, and anybody can find something to love. Vanilla, tobacco, menthol, fruits, beverages—nearly every flavor profile is represented in some way, including flavorless in the “Clear” variety. Each flavor is crisp and distinct, even when the liquid reservoir starts to run low.

Many of the fruit flavors also include a touch of menthol, making them very refreshing, especially on warmer days. Every flavor tastes very natural and bold, with no break-in period or weird flavors to speak of. The color of each Ultra corresponds to the flavor selection, so Lemon Mint will always be a lime green color. There are far too many combinations to have each color available for each flavor, but it’s nice that the variety of flavors is represented as an aesthetically pleasing color spectrum.

The Flonq Ultra clearly succeeds as the large, flagship offering. It holds a monstrous amount of liquid that can last heavy users several days at minimum and average users a week or more. The battery capacity is large enough to last at least a day, but passthrough functionality allows the Ultra to be used while charging to mitigate any downtime. Even so, a full charge only takes about 30 minutes.

Along with the Max Pro, the Flonq Ultra is undoubtedly one of the best disposable vapes on the market. All the extra features only serve to enhance convenience and simplicity rather than add complication, which should be a main focus for any disposable device. After all, the purpose of disposables is to not have to deal with much in the way of maintenance—refills, coil swaps, battery changes and so forth.

The screen is attractive and easy to decipher, providing essential information after every drag. Aesthetically, the Ultra steers away from the toy-like vibe and more toward the medical device look, save for the bright colors. Nothing about it comes across as gaudy or cheap. The shape is a bit more suited to smaller hands compared to the Max Pro due to the symmetry and being a bit thinner, but that shouldn’t be an issue for the majority of vapers.

There’s not much more to be said about the Flonq Ultra. Overall, it’s fantastic. It’s simple, convenient and provides an excellent vape experience. It can be used right out of the box, the screen is useful and intuitive, and boost mode provides a little extra oomph that allows for slightly different vaping styles.

When put next to the Flonq Max Pro, look and feel are the biggest differentiating factors. There are minor nuanced differences, such as the Ultra having a lanyard hook or airflow being slightly more open with the Ultra, but they are very similar. The Flonq Ultra stands on its own as a top-tier disposable and surely should not be overlooked.

  • Raising the Bar: Huml Reviews the Flonq Max

Raising the Bar: Huml Reviews the Flonq Max

The Flonq Max packs a lot into a small package in terms of value, vape quality and flavor choice.

    By Mike Huml

The Flonq Max is one of the more unique-looking pod systems on the market today. With a rounded design, it definitely looks a bit odd at first but not in a way that would draw attention or come off as tactless. It does, however, show a level of design inspiration that isn’t often seen in the world of disposable vapes.

While the technology beneath the shell isn’t exactly innovative, the fantastic implementation of currently existing technology shines brightly in the vape quality of the Flonq Max. This disposable pod system may not break the mold in terms of innovation, but the quality and value that it offers more than make up for any contrived new features that are largely unnecessary for pod systems.

At first glance, the Flonq Max looks very different from other pod systems and disposables. While other products mostly fall into the box shape with rounded edges, the Flonq is mostly rounded with one flat edge on which to set down the device. It more closely resembles a medical device, and perhaps that is by design.

It’s slightly larger than comparable devices but very light and easy to hold. The rounded, egg-like shape makes it easier for vapers with smaller hands to palm, for those with a preference. The Flonq Max has a glossy finish, but it doesn’t seem to retain fingerprints, possibly due to it being white. Overall, the Flonq Max is a bit chunkier than comparable pod systems, but the size is warranted due to the high battery and e-liquid capacities.

The Flonq Max houses a large 650 mAh battery and contains 14 mL of e-liquid with a strength of 35 mg. For average users, this is roughly 7 days’ to 10 days’ worth of e-liquid and at least one day’s worth of battery life. Heavier users may need to charge the Flonq Max more often; however, it does feature passthrough functionality and can be used while charging.

Any USB Type-C cable can be used to charge the Flonq Max, and a full charge can be achieved in under 30 minutes. A single white LED located on the flat edge of the device illuminates when a drag is taken or when it is charging. It will also blink several times when the user attempts to take a drag with a low battery, indicating that a charge is needed. The Flonq Max is draw-activated with no buttons or menus to worry about. It is extremely simple to use, and even new users should be able to get vaping within seconds, even with no prior knowledge.

Each Flonq Max comes included with a built-in mesh coil heating element. Mesh coils are ideal for pod systems as they require lower power to produce adequate vapor, which extends battery life and ensures peak efficiency when it comes to the e-liquid. The 14 mL capacity is advertised as the equivalent of 8,000 puffs, but this is difficult to determine without an included puff counter. However, as a rough guideline, the average user can expect large-capacity devices such as the Flonq Max to last for one week before the e-liquid starts to run dry.

Aesthetically, the Flonq Max is definitely unique and stands apart from the competition without drawing too much attention or being too flashy. Technologically, the features are fairly standard for disposable devices—a hefty battery, large e-liquid capacity and a mesh coil all contribute to voluminous vapor and admirable efficiency.

In terms of vape quality, while the Flonq Max doesn’t stand head and shoulders above the competition, it is certainly up there with the best of them. There are a variety of flavors offered, and each is as clean and bold as the last. Vapor production is indeed impressive as well, but the Flonq Max isn’t unique in that regard. The one area in which the Flonq Max can claim the top prize is the draw. The airflow of this device is extremely smooth.

Airflow enters through a pinhole on the flat edge of the device, as per usual with disposable devices, but the draw has no perceptible turbulence and never causes spitback. Although the airflow is not adjustable, it’s balanced perfectly for mouth-to-lung vaping. Again, like most other pod systems and disposables, direct-to-lung vaping is technically possible but is not recommended due to the restricted airflow and high nicotine concentration.

When it comes to flavors, the Flonq Max also stands out from the crowd due to the sheer variety. Other brands do have many flavors but mostly include fruits. The Flonq Max does have fruit flavors, such as Watermelon Ice, Cherry Peach and Grape, but it breaks from the mold a bit with other flavors not generally seen in disposables such as Milk Chocolate, Strawberry Ice Cream and Yummy Bear.

    Mike Huml
Mike Huml has been vaping since 2009 and has been working in the vapor industry for more than five years. He has extensive experience in various industry segments, including purchasing, quality assurance and content creation.

There is even a flavorless option called Clear, which is rare to see. Instead of a multitude of vaguely differentiated fruit flavors, the Flonq Max truly offers options for vapers of different tastes. Each flavor is available in a strength of 35 mg, which is a good middle ground that should appeal to the majority of vapers.

Even with a relatively high nicotine strength, the throat hit is not overbearing. There is certainly a satisfying kick with each drag, but the airflow does a fantastic job of mitigating any harshness. The salt form of nicotine used in the Flonq Max and many other mouth-to-lung devices also mellows out the harshness of the nicotine very well.

The vapor production of the Flonq Max is also impressive in that a light draw will produce a nice cloud comparable to a traditional cigarette, if not more. Many lower quality vapes out there require a good amount of huffing and puffing with little payoff, but with the Flonq Max, it’s effortless.

The mesh heating element and smooth airflow are paired perfectly to produce an easy, relaxing vape experience. What’s more, the airflow is as close to silent as has been possible up to this point in time. Even with more aggressive drags, it can be difficult to hear the sound of the draw, which only adds to that “smooth” vaping experience.

A word on value: The Flonq Max can be had for $18 to $30 at a retail level, which is right around average for disposable devices. For heavy users, this can accumulate quickly but is still cheaper than smoking a pack of cigarettes per day. Most users will find that the price is reasonable for a week’s worth of hassle-free and maintenance-free vaping.

So the price may be a selling point but not one that would push a potential customer toward the Flonq Max over a similar product. However, given the price, the flavor selection has the potential to be a major selling point. Fruit flavors are a dime a dozen, and it’s becoming harder and harder to find bakery or beverage flavors.

The Flonq Max offers those flavors as well as fruit and fruit-and-menthol flavors, leaving room for users to try out not just different flavors but entirely new categories of flavors. For shop owners that also sell bottled e-liquid and refillable devices, the Flonq Max could be a great way to expose customers to a wider variety of products.

The Flonq Max doesn’t do anything particularly groundbreaking, but is doesn’t necessarily need to. What is does, it does very well, and it’s always a good idea to not overcomplicate a tried-and-true product design that appeals to a wide range of vapers. The mesh heating element produces big, flavorful clouds and keeps the power and e-liquid consumption to a minimum.

The large battery only needs to be charged once per day for most normal users and doesn’t add any unnecessary hassle. The star of the show here is really the airflow. While it’s not adjustable, it doesn’t need to be as it’s perfectly smooth and quiet as is. And again, airflow and other added features would only take away from the smooth design aesthetic and simplicity that is extremely important for disposable devices.

While the shape may take some getting used to, it should also be noted that since it can only be set down on the one flat edge, that edge does a nice job of keeping the device from tipping over. It’s a small thing, but many pod systems and disposables are on the thinner side, and that causes them to topple when a table is bumped.

When set down on the flat side, the Flonq Max is very difficult to knock over. In any case, the shape works. It’s unique and helps the Flonq Max stand apart from its peers without being offensive to the eye. And with the theme of the Flonq Max appearing to be “a smooth vaping experience,” the smooth, rounded aesthetic ties in nicely.

The Flonq Max packs a lot into a small package in terms of value, vape quality and flavor choice. It leans toward simplicity and smoothness rather than innovation and features, and there’s nothing wrong with that. The Flonq Max is a great disposable in and of itself, and that’s something that’s readily apparent to anyone who tries it. It may be just another disposable, but it’s not just another disposable.

Innokin’s new ArcFire pod system strikes the perfect balance of performance, quality and convenience.

    By Mike Huml

The Innokin ArcFire is the latest device from the long-standing vapor device manufacturer. As with all things Innokin, the ArcFire elevates the pod system archetype to new heights in terms of performance, consistency and quality. While it doesn’t bring anything new to the table, ArcFire presents a streamlined offering that keeps things simple while still delivering maximum performance.

ArcFire is a basic pod system device with refillable, swappable pods and a lightweight yet durable construction. The body has aluminum wrapped around it with about a 7 mm gap on one edge.

This gap provides a slightly recessed platform for airflow, a single button, LED indicators and a better view of the remaining e-liquid. The ArcFire features a USB-C charging port and a ring light on its tip, which illuminates when the device is firing or charging.

    Mike Huml

The pod can contain up to 3 mL of e-liquid (with an EU Tobacco Product Directive-compliant 2 mL pod also available) and is refillable via a hole in the side that’s visible when removed from the rest of the device. A silicone plug is easily opened to reveal the filling port.

Each pod consists of a 1.2 ohm mesh coil that cannot be replaced independently of the pod. The pod is held in place very securely with strong magnets, and given the semi-oval shape of the aluminum housing, it can only be inserted into the device in one direction due to the slight asymmetry.

An internal 650 mAh battery offers long battery life without adding unnecessary bulk to the overall package. The ArcFire should last a full day of normal use for most vapers and will far outlast a single fill of the pod. However, the ArcFire does feature passthrough functionality and can be used while charging if necessary. The side panel of the Arcfire contains three small LED indicators that display remaining battery life.

Three lights indicate a charge level of 65 percent or higher, two lights for a charge level of 15 percent to 65 percent and a single light for a charge level below 15 percent. The LEDs illuminate when a draw is taken or when the button on the side is pressed once. Three clicks of the same button will toggle the ArcFire’s power on or off. The button is not used to fire the device as the ArcFire is equipped with a draw-activated switch only.

It’s a relatively standard feature set that keeps things simple, which is ideal when it comes to pod systems. The coil features a mesh heating element that produces vapor consisting of finer particles for easier nicotine absorption. Additionally, mesh heating elements are more effective with lower power, meaning more vapor is produced with less energy and heat.

That means longer battery life, no dry hits and no spitback. It’s remarkably consistent regardless of the amount of remaining liquid, the viscosity of the liquid or the remaining battery voltage. The ArcFire outputs a consistent 3.4 volts at all times, but small variations in power have virtually no impact on the vaping experience.

The airflow is a bit on the open side but is still perfectly comfortable for mouth-to-lung vaping. Lung hits are restrictive and uncomfortable but still technically possible. However, there are better devices on the market for vapers looking for a lung-hit experience. The ArcFire was clearly intended to be used as a mouth-to-lung device with nicotine salt e-liquid, and in that arena, it succeeds without question.

The 650 mAh battery offers significantly more battery life than most other pod systems, as well as disposable devices, on the market today. What’s more impressive is that the battery can reach a 75 percent charge after being plugged in for only 30 minutes due to the incorporation of USB-C. Between a large battery that charges quickly and the option to either refill or swap pods, the ArcFire has very little downtime. It’s the perfect device for vapers on the go who want a no-hassle experience.

It’s also great to see a refillable pod that doesn’t require coils to be swapped. Many devices offer disposable pods in which the coil can also be changed out, but all too often, this is a redundant feature that leads to messes and too much complexity for the pod-style platform. If the entire pod can be replaced, then the coil doesn’t need to be swappable as well.

The ArcFire being refillable allows between 10 mL and 60 mL to pass through its pod before it needs to be replaced, depending on the liquid used. That means for a normal user, on average, the pod should probably be replaced once per week, which is more than reasonable given how easy it is to replace the pod. Simply slide it out and throw it away, then replace it with a new, filled pod. The coil will need a few minutes to prime after it is filled for the first time, but regardless, the entire process is simple and painless.

ArcFire produces a nice, voluminous cloud of vapor with very little effort. Flavors come through clean and pure with absolutely no added flavor or strange aftertastes. Another advantage of being refillable is that each vaper has a much wider variety of flavors to choose from.

While pre-filled pods or disposables have come a long way in terms of flavor choice, they still lock the user into an ecosystem. The ArcFire allows for the freedom to use any e-liquid from any manufacturer.

That’s an attractive option, especially for vapers who use a lower nicotine strength or are looking to taper down in their nicotine consumption. Many pod systems and disposables only offer 50 mg, and some offer an additional lower strength in the neighborhood of 25 mg to 30 mg.

With refillable pods such as the ArcFire, users can taper down to 12 mg, 6 mg or even 0 mg if they are looking to kick the habit. There are many other reasons vapers prefer lower nicotine levels, and the ArcFire offers much more choice in this regard compared to disposable devices or pre-filled pods.

Innokin, as expected, continues to live up to its reputation in the ArcFire. The features are streamlined and simple, the build quality is rugged yet sleek, and the vape quality is unquestionably top notch. On top of that, the ArcFire offers many benefits for those looking to move up from disposables as purchasing e-liquid is often cheaper than buying an entirely new device when the e-liquid runs dry.

This also opens up an entire world of new flavors to experience and new nicotine strengths to enjoy. Aside from the refillable nature of the device, the larger battery and fast charging speed add another layer of convenience over increasingly popular disposable devices.

There is definitely a huge market for this type of device from both ends of the spectrum. Current users of disposables may be looking for something slightly more robust with more options and less expensive upkeep costs. More advanced vapers may be looking for something more portable without sacrificing quality.

Either way, the ArcFire strikes a perfect balance of performance, quality and convenience that’s immediately appealing to all types of vapers. Not to mention, it has the Innokin name behind it, which should offer some peace of mind that the ArcFire will remain reliable and well supported for years to come.

    Change of Pace

The FAV successfully accomplishes its goal of bridging the gap between combustible smoking and vaping.

    By Mike Huml

The FAV aims to achieve the seemingly impossible: replicating the taste of a cigarette without burning tobacco. Its primary focus is to effectively convert smokers into vapers, addressing the common complaint that vapes don’t taste like cigarettes. By precisely weaving a variety of tobacco leaves into the cotton wicking material, the FAV claims to have finally accomplished what no other device has managed to do over the past 15 or so years, which is to replicate the flavor and feel of an analog cigarette. Has it succeeded?

The device itself is fairly standard. The rounded body contains a 450 mAH battery that can be charged via USB-C. Each replaceable pod comes in two pieces that snap together before use and are inserted into the body. These pods hold 2 mL of e-liquid, each coil has a resistance of 1.2 ohms, and the battery fires at a power of 9 watts to 9.5 watts. On average, the battery and the pod last for approximately 300 puffs to 350 puffs, with the battery charging in about 20 minutes. For comparison, the average pack of analog cigarettes offers 200 puffs.

A decorative sticker is wrapped around the top portion of the body, adding some flair without being overly offensive to the aesthetic. The mouthpiece is round and wide, resembling the size and shape of a traditional cigarette while ensuring a smooth vaping experience without any spitback or gurgling. When the pod is installed, the device provides a haptic vibration to confirm that it’s ready to go, and a single LED offers some visual feedback as well. It’s a simple design but one that will appeal to the target market of current smokers who are likely not looking for anything extravagant.

Aesthetics and operation are simple but also ancillary to the focus of the FAV. So how does it compare to a cigarette? First and foremost, the draw is remarkably similar to that of a cigarette. Vapers will likely recognize the trademark scratchy airflow reminiscent of the cartomizer days, which is ideal as cartomizers were always closest to emulating the sensation of smoking a cigarette. The FAV delivers a consistent yet intangible “fuzzy” experience when taking a drag, capturing the essence of an analog cigarette.

What about the flavor? Does it taste like a burning cigarette?

Not exactly. But it’s damn close.

In a blind taste test, it may not fool a smoker entirely, but it unquestionably comes the closest any device has ever come. It’s important to note that cigarettes burn, and replicating that distinct flavor can only be achieved by burning something, which undermines the harm reduction aspect of vaping. The most apparent difference between the FAV’s flavors and other flavors is the lack of excessive sweetness. Over the years, e-liquids have become increasingly overloaded with sweeteners, which can be off-putting for smokers looking to transition. Additionally, the FAV delivers a substantial throat hit. As nicotine salts have become more popular due to the lack of throat hit, the FAV is more reminiscent of liquid nicotine, feeling more like a 24 mg to 36 mg liquid nicotine throat hit, which is far harsher than even most 50 mg nicotine salts. That’s impressive considering each FAV pod is offered at a strength of 20 mg.

The FAV offers six flavors, roughly categorized as full flavored, light and ultralight, with corresponding menthol variations. The lighter flavors tend to be sweeter, but the level of sweetness in even the lighter flavors pales in comparison to traditional e-liquid flavors. The available flavors are as follows:

    Bravado (full flavor)

This flavor certainly lives up to its name. It has the deepest tobacco flavor and strongest throat hit. It’s the earthiest flavor of the bunch, with a possible whisper of vanilla on the back end. The closest cigarette comparison would be Camel Turkish Royals.

    Bravado Jade (menthol full flavor)

This flavor closely resembles its nonmenthol counterpart. While it introduces a mild cooling effect on the draw, the tobacco remains dominant throughout the exhale. The throat hit is primarily derived from the tobacco rather than the menthol. The closest cigarette comparison would be Newports.

    Iconic (light)

This flavor is likely to become a favorite among users. It offers a touch of honey-like sweetness on the draw and a subdued tobacco flavor on the exhale. The throat hit is significantly milder compared to Bravado, and the flavor concludes with a cleaner finish. The closest cigarette comparison would be Marlboro Lights.

    Iconic Teal (menthol light)

This flavor is notably crisper than Bravado Jade, delivering a cooler draw that persists through the exhale. The throat hit is slightly harsher than Iconic but still far less intense than Bravado. The cooling sensation lingers, but there is no minty flavor. The flavor leans more toward tobacco than menthol. The closest cigarette comparison would be Marlboro Milds.

    Resolute (ultralight)

This flavor exhibits a subtle saccharin sweetness on the tip of the tongue during the draw, disappearing immediately upon inhalation. The throat hit is surprisingly sharper than with Iconic. Resolute offers a somewhat tangy exhale and minimal tobacco flavor overall, resulting in a sharp yet clean taste. The closest cigarette comparison would be Parliament Lights.

    Resolute Green (menthol ultralight)

This flavor shares the same sweetness on the draw as Resolute but delivers a slightly sharper throat hit and a notable menthol presence on the exhale. The tanginess persists but is balanced by the menthol, resulting in a well-rounded experience. The closest cigarette comparison would be Marlboro Menthol Ultra Lights.

Unlike traditional cigarettes, the “light” designation does not affect nicotine levels, as all flavors contain nicotine at a strength of 20 mg. However, none of the aforementioned flavors leave a lingering chest tightness or residual wheezing. While they may not taste as “clean” as traditionally flavored e-liquids, they still provide a clean-feeling vaping experience. It’s worth noting that the menthol varieties do not possess an overpowering icy kick. As of yet, there is no comparable option for those seeking a flavor similar to Kools.

The FAV is undoubtedly the best option for smokers who still enjoy smoking and are not necessarily looking to quit altogether. Transitioning from smoking to vaping, though easier than quitting abruptly, still requires some adjustment. Many new vapers who persist for at least two weeks often find themselves missing the act of smoking but no longer able to tolerate the taste when they revert back. However, many individuals are unable or unwilling to endure that duration and end up abandoning vaping to return to smoking.

For individuals who have been exclusively vaping for an extended period, the FAV may not offer much novelty. While some vapers might be tired of overly sweet flavors saturating the market, the thought of a cigarette’s taste can be overwhelming for many. Nonetheless, the FAV is perfect for those genuinely committed to making the switch while still enjoying the flavor of their cigarettes.

Until now, tobacco-flavored e-liquids have failed to hit the mark. True tobacco flavors often resemble licking a tobacco leaf while others present a disappointing blend of nutty, vanilla and caramel notes. As previously mentioned, replicating the flavor of burning without actually burning something is nearly impossible. By incorporating tobacco into the wicking material, where it is subject to heating, the FAV comes remarkably close to achieving that goal.

Although many manufacturers have experimented with heat-not-burn devices that vaporize tobacco leaves, these devices have seen little success. The FAV strikes a harmonious balance between liquid-based e-cigarettes and heat-not-burn (HnB) devices. It operates similarly to any other pod system but offers a taste more akin to an HnB device without the waste and inconvenience of loose-leaf replacement.

Furthermore, the FAV aims to address the issue of youth vaping. The device’s chip remains nonfunctional unless activated by the retailer at the point of sale, adding an additional layer of security, provided the retailer follows ethical practices. Moreover, the FAV’s flavors primarily attract current smokers, making it less appealing to minors by design.

However, this feature also prevents the use of stolen products and ensures that only legitimate pods will work with the battery. There are plans to incorporate more features in the future to enhance security and assist with the cessation process, such as limiting the number of puffs per day.

At its core, the FAV does not differ significantly from other pod systems. It consists of a pod inserted into a battery, producing vapor upon inhalation. Its aesthetic design is generally unremarkable, not standing out in any particular way. Nevertheless, given its target market, this approach is likely the best route for the FAV.

It appeals to a broader audience, and its true innovation lies beneath the surface. No other device, be it a pod system or otherwise, can genuinely claim to taste like a cigarette. The FAV can, and it is not mere hype. Although it does not perfectly replicate the experience of an analog cigarette, it comes remarkably close. Introducing a mind-numbing menthol flavor to the lineup would be a welcome addition, but the FAV is undeniably a unique offering in the market.

The FAV successfully accomplishes its goal of bridging the gap between smoking and vaping, exceeding expectations in the process. This device fulfills the desires of smokers who were hopeful when vaping first gained popularity. Many curious smokers were deterred by poorly executed tobacco flavor reproductions, subpar build quality and poor quality control.

The FAV presents a simple yet refined device, born out of years of iteration and improvement of the pod system archetype. It combines this perfected design with new and innovative flavor technology, potentially capturing the attention of smokers who have remained unconvinced over the years.

For an industry that thrived on innovation for so long, it is refreshing to witness truly meaningful innovation reemerge. The FAV stands as a distinctive device in all the ways that matter, potentially serving as the missing link in the market that smokers have been eagerly awaiting.

  • Disposable Debate

    Disposable Debate

Two popular disposable vaping devices, Hyde IQ and Elf Bar BC5000, each have their faults.

    By Mike Huml

The Hyde IQ vs. the Elf Bar BC5000

With vaping continuously rising in popularity, convenience is the name of the game. In particular, disposable devices have quietly begun dominating the market. As with any vaping product, there exists benefits and drawbacks, and as the overall quality of disposable devices has unquestionably been increasing, some drawbacks are inherent to the nature of disposables. Two popular disposable vapes have seen the mitigation of these drawbacks to different extents—the Hyde IQ and the Elf Bar BC5000. Both are similar at first glance, but how do they truly stack up against one another?

    Aesthetics

The Elf Bar and the Hyde IQ are similar in size and shape. The Hyde IQ is slightly shorter and wider than the Elf Bar, but both are very lightweight and easy to slip into a pocket or pocketbook. The Hyde IQ features hard plastic all around with some texturing to improve grip. There’s a sticker placed on the front that brands the device “Hyde.” The Elf Bar is also fully plastic with hard plastic on the top and bottom, but the body has a rubberized finish for a better grip. Additionally, the labeling is applied directly to the surface and reads “Elf Bar,” and “BC5000,” followed by the name of the flavor contained within.

Both the Hyde IQ and the Elf Bar are clearly constructed with economy and value in mind, but the Elf Bar edges out the Hyde IQ by presenting a more premium look and feel. It’s more subdued and not as flashy as the Hyde IQ and is likely to appeal to both men and women. While the Elf Bar favors pastel colors and a softer aesthetic, the Hyde IQ leans into a Hot Wheels car-type appearance and color scheme. While the Hyde IQ may stand out from the rest on the shelf, there are certainly more important features other that looks when it comes to any vapor product.

    Battery

For many vapers, neither the Hyde IQ nor the Elf Bar will last all day on a single charge, but they’re not far off. The Elf Bar contains a 650 mAh battery while Hyde has not revealed the battery specifications. From a subjective standpoint, the Elf Bar does last considerably longer than the Hyde IQ, but it also takes longer to charge. With an empty battery, the Hyde can charge to full in approximately 15 minutes while the Elf Bar can take up to 30 minutes. What’s more, the Hyde IQ has passthrough functionality, allowing it to be used while it’s connected to the charger. The Elf Bar does not offer this feature.

Normally, the trade-off here would be obvious—longer battery life versus faster charging—which is a wash and a matter of personal preference. However, due to the lack of passthrough functionality in the Elf Bar, the Hyde IQ takes the point in this category. Although the battery charges remarkably quickly, that means that passthrough functionality isn’t needed for the most part. Ironically, the device that would benefit most from passthrough functionality is the one that does not have it—the Elf Bar.

    Capacity

Both the Hyde IQ and the Elf Bar boast 5,000 puffs, but something doesn’t quite add up. The Elf Bar contains 13 mL of e-liquid while the Hyde IQ only contains 8 mL. On paper, that information may lead one to believe that the Elf Bar perhaps hits a little warmer, but that is not the case. Both devices are very similar in terms of vapor production and heat, but the Hyde IQ does come off as slightly warmer with a bit more vapor.

Without a puff counter, it’s nearly impossible to determine the actual number of puffs in each device, but subjectively, the Elf Bar lasts longer before needing to be discarded and replaced. With a slightly smoother vape experience and larger capacity, this makes perfect sense. As such, the Elf Bar comes out on top.

    Extra features

Fancy features are usually an afterthought when it comes to disposables as they tend to bloat the price and take away from the simplicity of such devices. However, in this case, the Hyde IQ offers a few things that are useful and unique.

First, the Hyde IQ features adjustable airflow. A sliding switch on the bottom of the device allows for a narrow range of airflow adjustments, but there is a range nonetheless. The Elf Bar has nothing to compare. Granted, the airflow is smooth and the amount of air is just right for mouth-to-lung vaping, but it might not be for everyone.

The Hyde IQ also features 2 LEDs that change color to indicate remaining battery life as well as remaining e-liquid. This is extremely helpful to avoid a surprise dry hit when there’s no e-liquid remaining and to give the user a heads-up when a charge is needed. Now, these lights are not 100 percent accurate nor consistent. The Hyde IQ’s e-liquid light will often begin to blink, indicating there is less than 15 percent e-liquid remaining, but continues to work properly for quite a while. It’s by no means perfect, but it does offer a very general idea as to how much juice is left. Anything is better than guessing.

The battery life indicator is much more reliable than the e-liquid light, likewise turning from green to yellow to red, then to blinking red at critical levels. It’s simple and effective, and having some idea as to the remaining battery life is a fantastic quality-of-life feature, particularly for devices with smaller batteries like disposables.

The Hyde IQ takes the point in this category. Although the airflow adjustment is rudimentary and the indicator lights can be somewhat less than accurate, it’s nice to be able to adjust the airflow according to user preference and to have some level of confirmation when it comes to the battery and reservoir.

    Vape quality and flavors

Flavors are highly subjective, and every vaper has their own tastes and preferences. Both the Hyde IQ and the Elf Bar have lots of flavors to choose from, although the Elf Bar has a few more than the Hyde IQ. In general, the Hyde IQ will offer flavors that are more robust while the Elf Bar’s flavors are more subtle. Both devices’ flavor descriptions match the actual taste to a large degree—if you order spearmint, it will taste like spearmint.

As for overall vape quality, there are some slight differences between the Elf Bar and the Hyde IQ. The Hyde IQ is a bit warmer with greater throat hit. It’s punchy, and the flavors shine very apparently. This results in great amounts of flavorful vapor, which doesn’t necessarily require long drags. On the other hand, the Elf Bar’s flavors are more nuanced, and the vapor is cooler and smoother. Neither is objectively better than the other, but there are differences, nonetheless.

In addition, the Elf Bar never floods or gurgles whereas the Hyde IQ can, potentially, when left on its side or when its e-liquid is running on empty. This clears up after a drag or two and doesn’t seem to cause leaking or spitback, but it can still be annoying when it happens. With the charging port located on the bottom of the device, some gurgling is likely to be experienced after charging the Hyde IQ since it cannot stand upright while it is charging.

All other things being equal, this slight flooding isn’t a deal breaker. However, the Elf Bar does pull slightly ahead due to this. For fans of warmer and harsher vapes, it’s still worth going with the Hyde IQ despite this small issue.

    Value

The Hyde IQ and the Elf Bar both retail for between $15 and $30 depending on the retailer. In terms of best bang for the buck, the Elf Bar wins outright. It contains 13 mL of e-liquid compared to the Hyde IQ’s 8 mL and houses a larger battery. On the other hand, the Elf Bar is missing all the features that make the Hyde IQ unique—adjustable airflow, battery and e-liquid LED indicators and passthrough functionality. So in terms of pure value, the Elf Bar offers the most nicotine for the money while forgoing all the bells and whistles.

    Overall

Between the Elf Bar and the Hyde IQ, there really is no clear winner. For a slightly smoother and more consistent vape at the best value, the Elf Bar is the way to go. For a bit more fine-tuning and peace of mind along with a hotter, throatier vape, the Hyde IQ is the better option.

Either way, both devices satisfy the ever-popular need for a quality vape experience with minimal fuss. Smaller pod systems and disposables require bulk purchasing or frequent stops at the vape store whereas these larger 5,000-puff devices can last 3 days to a week without breaking a sweat. The Elf Bar and the Hyde IQ both offer similar experiences with subtle differences, but as is always the case with vaping, it will ultimately be up to the user which device is best for them.

  • Duel Identity

    Duel Identity

ALD’s new XPLLO offers a quality vaping experience for a large segment of the vapor market.

    By Mike Huml

The ALD XPLLO is a straightforward pod system device from ALD. It uses both disposable and refillable pods, leaving either option open according to user preference. For anyone looking for something a little more robust than a disposable without sacrificing ease of use, the XPLLO fits the bill perfectly.

The XPLLO is about average in terms of size compared to similar devices while being slightly heavier than a disposable. This is likely due to higher quality materials and a larger battery that clocks in at 580 mAh. The XPLLO fires a 1.7 ohm heating element at 7.5 watts, so the 580 mAh battery goes a long way due to low current draw. That’s not to say that the vapor is weak—far from it, and without being told the specifications prior, you would never guess it’s only firing at 7.5 watts.

The pod itself holds 2 mL of e-liquid, and the coil cannot be replaced. Once the coil or the pod is used up, the entire pod gets replaced. It’s held in place with relatively strong magnets that yield a slight amount of play but without feeling janky. Pods are secure once installed, and that can be demonstrated by lifting up the XPLLO while gripping only the pod and shaking it a bit. It stays assembled with no issues. Each mod is made out of translucent plastic, so it’s comfortable between the lips or teeth, and remaining e-liquid can be viewed with ease.

The XPLLO has a single button that can be used to fire the device or turn it on or off with five successive clicks. However, the XPLLO is also draw activated, making it a good fit for fans of both types of activation. The body is aluminum, contributing nearly completely to the quality difference between two-piece pod systems like the XPLLO and single-piece plastic disposables. The obligatory LED is included here as well, illuminating when a drag is taken or when the device is powered on or off. The color acts as an indicator as to the remaining battery charge.

Speaking of the battery, at 580 mAh, it can last upward of four hours of use depending on the user’s vaping habits. A USB-C port is located on the tip of the XPLLO, and a full charge can be achieved in under 30 minutes with the right charger or adapter. Thankfully, USB-C ports are becoming more and more common on vapor devices, which not only leads to faster charging and a higher level of compatibility (mobile devices have used USB-C for years) but also alleviates the annoyance of fiddling with the charging cable, flipping it over to make sure it’s oriented correctly.

When it comes to performance, the XPLLO can compete with the best of them. Flavor is crisp and clean, and vapor production is surprisingly robust given the relatively high resistance of the heating element and low power output. No sacrifices were made in the vapor department, but there are huge gains when it comes to battery life. Like other ALD products, vapor is produced effortlessly with no spitback or gurgling. The airflow is perfect for mouth-to-lung vaping, and few people will miss the ability to tweak the airflow.

It can be difficult to stand out in the vapor industry now that pod systems and disposables have saturated the market. At a glance, they can all look very similar to one another. Performance is where the standouts can be seen, and the XPLLO certainly stands out. It offers several options not generally available on disposables, such as the dual-activated switch and power toggle functionality, but remains simple enough that anyone can pick it up and get a fantastic vaping experience with no learning curve.

The XPLLO from ALD represents everything that a pod system should be—simple, reliable and hassle-free. It doesn’t sacrifice an iota of performance or quality to achieve these things. It acts as both a perfect entry point for new vapers and an upgrade for those coming from disposables. It’s also a formidable option for more advanced users who want something quick and easy to carry around when large mods become too cumbersome. It’s a wide and diverse market, and the XPLLO checks many boxes that will appeal to said market.

All in all, the XPLLO represents great value for anyone looking to pick up a pod system. It pulls no punches and sacrifices nearly nothing to provide a convenient, quality and reliable vaping experience for a large segment of the vapor market.

  • Dropping the Boom

    Dropping the Boom

ALD’s Boom Max is a disposable e-cigarette that offers performance, reliability, convenience and value.

    By Mike Huml

The Boom Max from ALD is an oversized, lightweight, disposable e-cigarette that offers performance, reliability, convenience and value. It’s the perfect vaping companion for longer outings without the added heft of similar devices.

The Boom Max has a lot going for it despite its simplicity. For starters, it’s diameter is slightly larger than that of a U.S. quarter coin, but it remains lightweight due to a smaller battery. It holds 8 mL of e-liquid but is only equipped with a 400 mAh battery. However, it is rechargeable via a USB-C cable, and this is actually a better scenario than having a larger battery with a smaller e-liquid reserve.

Consider this: Most disposable vapor devices end up sitting on a shelf for a good amount of time and most battery-operated devices don’t ship with a fully charged battery. That means whether by design or by happenstance, the battery in a disposable will deplete faster than the e-liquid, and many disposables are not rechargeable. As a battery sits uncharged and unused, its remaining capacity depletes. So, many unlucky customers end up buying a disposable with a nearly dead battery that cannot be charged. With a USB-C charging port and a modest battery, the Boom Max can be recharged in about 15 minutes, ensuring that the liquid can be fully used up with no wasted juice or money.

A smaller battery is also lighter, and despite the size of the Boom Max, it remains extremely lightweight and manageable with a large e-liquid reservoir. That makes the Boom Max the perfect portable vape, and in this day and age, many people have access to a charger for their mobile devices. With such chargers almost always available at a moment’s notice, the pros of a smaller battery far outweigh the cons and demonstrate good judgment on the part of ALD’s designers.

The performance of the Boom Max is fantastic all around. With a draw-activated switch and a tapered mouthpiece, the Boom Max feels comfortable and easy to use. It never feels like you’re pulling and pulling for anemic vapor production. The built-in 1 ohm heating element fires at 11 watts, and that’s just about perfect for mouth-to-lung vaping. The vapor is warm but not overbearing or harsh, and the flavor is clean and refreshing. There’s no spitback, gurgling or leaking at all, and the entire experience is satisfying and effortless.

Each flavor from ALD, while simple, is infused with a touch of menthol, which really adds to the crisp and refreshing sensation in each drag. While some vapers may not be a fan of menthol, keep in mind that menthol is not mint. Mint has several varieties of specific flavors, but menthol in itself is flavorless. It only provides a cooling sensation, much like capsaicin adds the heat to spicy foods but has no distinct flavor on its own.

As such, menthol pairs perfectly with fruit and beverage flavors as these are generally consumed cold. As you’re vaping Blueberry Ice, for example, you’re not tasting minty blueberries. Instead, you’re tasting crisp, fresh blueberries. Out of all the flavors sampled from ALD, none of them missed the mark. Naturally, each person has their own flavor preferences, but each flavor is accurate to the description.

Many fans of disposable vapes, particularly the large disposables advertising 3,000 puffs or more, have complained of these devices only lasting a day or two before the “massive” battery dies while they were expecting to get a week of use. Sometimes a simple solution is the best solution, as demonstrated by the Boom Max. Why offer a battery that can provide 3,000 puffs that never comes fully charged when you can cut the weight almost in half with a smaller battery and make it rechargeable? This is the main advantage of the Boom Max over the competition.

The Boom Max looks simple and unassuming, performs great and holds a lot of liquid—but so do many other devices. Many of those devices fall short in the convenience department, however, since customers pay a premium, expecting to use their device for a week but only getting a day or two. As the playing field levels out in terms of vape quality, convenience will become the deciding factor for many vapers, and the Boom Max is the epitome of convenience.

The lightweight nature and foolproof operation of the Boom Max make it an easy sell for anyone just wanting to pick up a disposable, crack open the box and start vaping. The Drag X from Voopoo is the latest pod-mod to hit the market, and it has deservedly garnered attention for its looks and performance. Although technically a pod system, it’s better to think of the Drag X as a cloud-chasing mod that uses a proprietary connection in lieu of a 510 connection. Without a doubt, the Drag X is sure to please those looking for large clouds in a small package and no hassle.

The mod section of the Drag X is expertly crafted to look sleek but with a rugged feel. Matte metal is contrasted with polished trim and a leather grip that is a joy to hold and behold. Three-button operation with limited menu options keeps the Drag X from becoming too complicated while still retaining much of the customization that allows for fine-tuning to personal preferences. To complement this, Voopoo’s Gene chip works as a sort of faux temperature control to suggest the best wattage and eliminate burning due to low e-liquid or an excess of power.

The Drag X can provide a minimum of 5 watts and a maximum of 80 watts of power to each of the two available coils, with each having its own recommended range. The tank section is removable, as is the coil, and it’s clear that the tank is intended to be semi-permanent while the coils are continuously replaced. The tank itself is a single piece of plastic with no removable mouthpiece and is held in place with strong magnets.

This makes it very convenient to refill the tank or replace the coil. One only needs to pull off the tank and turn it upside down to reveal the fill port and coil. Filling requires removing the silicone plug, and coil replacement is as easy as sliding the old coil out and the new one in.

Airflow is adjustable, and air intake is located toward the top of the mod section. Large air holes are situated on either side and are adjusted by sliding a peg on the far side of the device, opposite the fire button. This works extremely well as adjustments are easy to make but unlikely to happen accidentally. While more comfortable as a thumb-firing device, the airflow will never be obstructed while firing with either the thumb or forefinger.

Airflow ranges from restricted to wide open, allowing for restricted lung hits and huge, unrestricted lung hits, but the Drag X does not cater particularly well to the mouth-to-lung crowd. Like most devices, it is possible, but the experience will be less than stellar. Both coil varieties feature a large airflow path that will cause mouth-to-lung drags to be harsh on the throat and produce little vapor.

The Drag X will come with a 0.15-ohm coil and a 0.3-ohm coil, which both use a mesh heating element for maximum surface area. This is fantastic for flavor, vapor production and usable power range. The 0.15-ohm coil features a larger airflow path for open lung hits while the 0.3-ohm coil is a bit narrower and works better at slightly lower wattages for restricted lung hits. Direct-lung vaping is the name of the game with the Drag X, with the only question being, “restricted or wide open?”

Based on anecdotal testing, the 0.15-ohm coil performs best between 40 watts and 80 watts while the 0.3-ohm coil is ideal for 25 watts to 45 watts. Additionally, the 0.15-ohm coil features a metal “shield” over each juice inlet that keeps too much liquid from saturating the coil and leaking. Voluminous lung hits require more e-liquid at any given time, but with a vertical-style coil with such a wide airflow path, there is very little room for wicking material, which can easily lead to dry hits.

Voopoo has done its research, and by restricting the juice flow just right, the 0.15-ohm coil never leads to dry hits, even when vaped multiple times in succession, and never leaks when left idle. It’s the perfect amount of juice flow for VG-heavy liquids. Voopoo’s Gene chip also acts as a safeguard against dry hits, automatically detecting if the coil gets too hot and stopping power.

This can be seen when the button is held without taking a drag—after about half a second, the device stops firing. This has the potential to be frustrating, but because of Voopoo’s due diligence, this never interferes with normal use, only kicking in when the tank is running on empty or if the device is fired accidentally.

The Drag X runs on a single 18650 battery that can be removed and replaced or charged internally with an included USB Type-C cable. This is the main downside of a device such as this: An 18650 battery simply cannot last very long providing high power to such a low-resistance coil. The tank holds 4.5 mL of e-liquid, and the battery will need to be charged at least twice before the tank runs out of juice, particularly when approaching the 80 watt maximum.

The vape quality is excellent, but it is difficult to envision the Drag X as being an all-day vape unless the user is carrying extra batteries or a charger along with the device. This can be mitigated by using a lower power setting or opting for the 0.3-ohm coil instead of the 0.15-ohm, and lower wattages actually do not hinder the experience very much. Due to the use of mesh heating elements, 40 watts produces just as much vapor and flavor as 80 watts but with slightly less heat.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of energy, 80 watts is just too much for any 18650 battery to handle in the long term. It’s just the way it’s always been and always will be until a new, revolutionary battery solution becomes available. Luckily, both coils still work extremely well at the lower end of their respective ranges, and this will increase battery life dramatically with virtually no cost to flavor or vapor production.

The menu system is simple and easy to use, while the screen is bright and easily legible. Pressing the fire button five times will turn the Drag X on or off, while holding the fire button and the plus button simultaneously will lock it—these are essentially the same function. The Drag X cannot be fired or adjusted while locked. Pressing the fire button three times will toggle between Smart mode and RBA mode.

While a rebuildable coil option is available separately, both modes will work with the included coils. RBA mode simply disables the Drag X’s automatic shutoff. If for some reason that feature is hindering the vape experience, it can be disabled by switching to RBA mode, and the Drag X will no longer automatically stop firing when there is not enough liquid or when the button is held down inadvertently.

In terms of aesthetics and build quality, the Drag X looks and feels like a solid piece of hardware. Multiple color options are available, and all of them find a beautiful compromise between leathery ruggedness and metallic sleekness. The buttons are clicky and tactile, the airflow adjustment is firm but smooth and the magnetic tank is removed easily yet nothing rattles or wobbles whatsoever. The size is also just about as small as an 18650 device can get, and that puts the Drag X more in the “small mod” category than in the “large pod system” category.

Overall, the Drag X is the perfect device for either advanced vapers who want something more portable than a multi-battery powerhouse for quick excursions, or anyone who wants to sample cloud-chasing without the need for rebuilding or more robust, complicated systems. The only thing holding the Drag X back is the battery, which is no fault of Voopoo’s.

Many 18650 batteries start to falter when used at upward of 50 watts, particularly at low resistances, and there is no way around that. Luckily, batteries can be swapped or charged very quickly, but this is definitely a device that would benefit from a 21700 battery option.

For a small increase in girth, the Drag X would be able to benefit from its full wattage range for much longer periods of time, and that is where this device truly shines—cloud chasing. Being barely a pod system, the Drag X stands on its own as a fantastic cloud-chasing mod that is only being held back by battery restrictions. The vape quality is impeccable, usage is simple and intuitive, and the build quality is impressive. It just does not last very long. Knowing this allows for workarounds such as carrying the USB charger or extra batteries, and that’s why the Drag X doesn’t really work as a pod system.

Pod systems are meant to be simple and effective, and having to carry extra accessories undermines that. However, as a small pocket tank of a cloud-chasing device, the Drag X undoubtedly succeeds. Cloud chasers always want more. More vapor, more flavor, more power. In this case, a little more power may actually be warranted, but that shouldn’t dissuade anyone from giving the Drag X the chance that it deserves.
