Huml Reviews the New Flonq Max Pro System

The Flonq Max Pro’s airflow is smooth and quiet, and there is no struggle to produce vapor.

    By Mike Huml

The Flonq Max Pro is a newly released version of the Flonq Max that offers multiple quality-of-life improvements and upgrades while retaining the same look and feel. The Max Pro isn’t just an ordinary disposable. Sure, it’s simple to use and isn’t loaded up with bells and whistles, but it performs wonderfully and has a great aesthetic. These coupled with the convenience of new features make the Max Pro more than worthy of keeping an eye on.

As far as standard features are concerned, the Max Pro includes a 650 mAh internal battery that’s charged via a USB type-C port on the bottom of the device. It contains 18 mL of e-liquid and is advertised to last 20,000 puffs. There is no adjustable airflow, but the default airflow is very smooth and restrictive enough to be reminiscent of a cigarette.

The unique flattened egg shape is very comfortable to hold, even though it may be slightly too large for those with small hands or those who are looking for something truly tiny. The trade-off is increased liquid capacity and battery life, and Flonq offers several smaller products as well. The Max Pro is the largest device in the line, tied with the Flonq Ultra.

On the flat side of the Max Pro is a screen and a button. The screen will illuminate during and for a short time after each drag to display the remaining e-liquid and battery life, and that is a great new trend being seen in high-end disposables. It takes all the guesswork out of using these devices while retaining all the simplicity of operation.

The button below the screen serves one purpose, and that is to toggle boost mode. When boost mode is activated, the rocket ship icon on the screen will turn from white to red, and the Max Pro will fire at a higher power. The heating element is two mesh coils, so even in boost mode, burning and dry hits are nonissues.

One may think that boost mode decreases the puff count, but that’s not necessarily true. While in normal mode, the Max Pro can be used as most any other mouth-to-lung device—long, slow drags as vapers have become accustomed to in order to give the heating element ample time to heat up and produce good vapor.

In boost mode, the Max Pro can be treated more like a traditional cigarette, with quick and sharp drags producing the same amount of vapor in less time. When used in this way, boost mode will still yield around 20,000 puffs since those puffs are shorter and about the same amount of e-liquid is consumed per drag.

However, when long, slow drags are taken while boost mode is active, this will use more e-liquid and more battery power per puff and shorten the life span. While this is not a feature unique to the Max Pro, Flonq’s implementation is among the best. There is a clear purpose to its usage, and it serves to appeal to vapers with different preferences.

As far as vape quality goes, the Max Pro competes with the best of them. Airflow is smooth and quiet, and there is no struggle to produce vapor. There is no spitback, gurgling, leaking or dry hits even when the device is set down sideways (this is necessary given the shape—it cannot be set down with the mouthpiece facing up).

Flonq also offers upward of 25 flavors ranging from tobacco and menthol to candy and fruit flavors. There is something here for everyone to enjoy, and each flavor packs a punch. Each drag is bold and flavorful and sticks to the tongue after the device is set down. Each flavor is distinct and refreshing as most of the fruit flavors contain at least a hint of menthol to bring out the crispness of the fruit flavor.

The Flonq Max Pro is as close to a perfect disposable device as one can currently get. It’s not overly large, although the size is justified. It’s more than capable of lasting the average vaper at least one week and several days for heavy users. The battery is on the average side, but even heavy users can expect to get about a full day’s worth of use before a charge is required.

The screen shows essential information at a glance, removing any frustration associated with relying on a disposable device to make it through the day. What’s more, the Max Pro features passthrough functionality, so it can be used while it’s charging. A full charge takes about 30 minutes, which just about pushes the limit of how fast a battery can be charged.

The aesthetic quality is great as well. The glossy, hard plastic might not be appealing to everyone at first, but it doesn’t attract fingerprints or ever start to look dingy unlike many other devices that opt for the rubberized matte finish. Each flavor corresponds to a specific colorway, making it easy to identify which flavor is which for those who like variety, and the colors do not cross the line into being tacky or toy-like.

The Flonq Max Pro is undoubtedly one of, if not the best disposable vapor device on the market. It vapes great, has a unique look that doesn’t go over the top, and a multitude of flavors are available for vapers of all preferences. If that wasn’t enough, the screen is actually very useful and easy to read while boost mode makes way for multiple vape styles.

There really is no better device that not only includes all the necessary features but also retains maximum simplicity. First-time vapers should have no qualms about opening the package and having a vape right away with no prior knowledge. All things considered, the Flonq Max Pro improves upon its predecessor in all the ways that matter and then some.

    Aegis Max Kit 2021

GeekVape’s new Aegis Max Kit sets a new standard for quality, performance and value.

    By Mike Huml

The Aegis Max Kit from GeekVape is the ideal kit for intermediate vapers or anyone looking for a robust single-battery setup that produces maximum vapor. With 21700 or 18650 battery compatibility, the Aegis Max will far outlast the competition, and with the included GeekVape Z sub-ohm tank, this kit truly sets the bar for intermediate kits.

GeekVape’s popular design aesthetic is continued with the Aegis Max mod, incorporating a rubberized texture along with metal and leather for a super comfortable feel and maximum durability. The Aegis series is designed to be dust-proof, water-resistant and to be protected from drops from a reasonable distance.

The 510 connection is a solid piece of steel that eliminates threading issues. It also provides a solid foundation for atomizers with diameters up to 30 mm with no overhang. The buttons and screen are more conducive to a thumb-firing grip, which works well with the rubberized finish and the leather portion and stitching.

The mod is simple enough to use in wattage mode or temperature control mode, and the menu features many shortcuts that offer additional functionality such as adjustment locking, stealth mode and more. These features come standard on many modern devices, but the Aegis Max allows more advanced users to dig deeper into the menu for more customization features.

TCR curves, variable power settings and firmware upgradeability are all available to those who really want to fine-tune their vaping experience. Although the Aegis Max is geared toward intermediate users, the advanced features never get in the way if ignored or not needed. This also opens up the Aegis Max as a serious contender for enthusiast vapers looking for something a bit more tame than a multi-battery device.

Although the Aegis Max kit includes an adapter for an 18650 battery, it really shines when used with a 21700 cell. With power output up to 100 watts, an 18650 battery just can’t hold out very long even when used in the 60 watt to 80 watt range. Additionally, using an 18650 battery means that the additional bulk of the mod is no longer justified, and GeekVape offers several other mod options that are either powered by an 18650 cell or an internal battery.

While the Aegis Max does offer internal charging via an included micro-USB cable, the battery door can also be unscrewed to remove and replace the battery. The battery door is a bit unique since it screws in but features a flip-out “handle” to assist the user. Because the Aegis Max prides itself on being sealed from water and dust, the battery cap incorporates an O-ring that sits at the base of the threading. This extra security also means that the process of twisting the battery door on or off doesn’t feel quite smooth, and this could have quickly derailed the whole system.

However, the handle that swings out makes battery replacement incredibly easy for most users and if it isn’t, GeekVape also includes a tool with the kit that further reduces the effort needed to manipulate the battery door. In short, the system works extremely well even when it doesn’t seem like it should at first glance, mainly because of the forethought of the manufacturers.

The screen on the Aegis Max differs from some other GeekVape mods in that it is monochrome instead of colored. However, this doesn’t impede functionality or readability in any way and may actually serve to keep the price reasonable. For anybody already accustomed to the menu system from other Aegis series devices, the Aegis Max is nearly identical. At a glance, the screen shows the current firing mode, the power or temperature setting, remaining battery life, coil resistance, amperage, voltage and a puff counter.

As for the Z tank—this is an extension and renaming of the Zeus line of products. This newest iteration, the Z Max tank or simply the Z tank, features a 25 mm diameter and uses replaceable mesh coils that are available in 0.2 ohm or 0.4 ohm varieties. The Aegis Max kit includes one of each, but both are very similar. The 0.2 ohm coil requires a bit more power but has slightly more airflow due to a marginally larger diameter.

The 0.4 ohm coil is slightly more reserved and will extend battery life by a small amount. Neither coil is specifically designed for restricted lung hits, but both can be used for this purpose with a small adjustment to output power and by closing the airflow adjustment ring to the desired value. Because of the mesh heating element, heat is dispersed more evenly, allowing for an overall improved vape experience. Flavor is more robust, more vapor is produced and a wider power range is possible with minimal risk of oversaturated or dry hits.

While the airflow adjustment ring at the top of the tank can be closed off to heavily restrict airflow, mouth-to-lung vaping is not recommended. The internals of the tank are wide open and designed for maximum airflow and vapor production. Attempting mouth-to-lung vaping will result in poor vapor production and a harsh throat hit. However, using a different tank specifically designed for mouth-to-lung vaping isn’t off the table, as the Aegis Max mod works just as well at 15 watts as it does at 100 watts. Coupled with a 21700 battery, several days of use can be achieved in between charges when used in this way.

The Z tank is designed from the ground up for cloud chasing and ease of use. Airflow is top down to eliminate leaking and to provide a smooth draw. The tank is also top filling for maximum convenience. The top cap unscrews approximately a quarter turn before it’s able to be removed and the tank filled. This helps eliminate the frustration of needing to turn the cap over and over for it to be removed.

It’s a small thing in theory, but anybody who has tried to fill a tank with excess liquid on their hands will understand the relief of a single, quick turn of the cap in order to remove it. Doing so reveals two large kidney-shaped fill ports, which are widely accepted as the best filling method. There is no juice backup due to pressure, and thick liquids can be dispensed quickly with no spillage.

The Z tank holds 5 mL of e-liquid with the default bubble glass installed, but the kit also comes with a standard glass tank section that reduces the size as well as the capacity to a moderate 3.5 mL. Coil replacement is relatively painless and can be done without the need to empty the tank beforehand. The base unscrews easily to reveal the coil, which simply slides in and out and is held in the correct position by two grooves on either side of the coil base. If for some reason the coil does not slide out easily, GeekVape has included a tool for that as well. It’s great to see that GeekVape has included tools to increase accessibility for some of the maintenance that may require the use of fine motor skills rather than compromise on quality.

The Aegis Max kit is unmatched in terms of build quality, aesthetic and performance. The mod is durable and rugged by design but is also easy to use while including features also found in GeekVape’s more advanced devices. As far as single-battery mods go, the incorporation of 21700 batteries is a no-brainer.

The advantages of extended battery life and increased reliability when used above 60 watts compared to a standard 18650 battery can’t be overstated. While the Aegis Max mod could be smaller, the increased size feels great in the hand, offers additional protection to the battery if dropped and allows for the use of extra-large atomizers with no overhang.

The GeekVape Z sub-ohm tank as well as the Z series coils are among the best on the market. Airflow is smooth and relatively quiet, and the vapor is effortlessly produced. The flavor is accurate and bold, and it’s safe to say that leaky tanks are a thing of the past, barring user error. Coil replacement and refilling are quick and easy, and a wide airflow path and mouthpiece means no spitback. The implementation of a mesh heating element keeps juice flow consistent and expands the ideal power range for each coil.

The kit comes with a myriad of replacement O-rings as well as the battery door and coil replacement tools. Everything except for a battery and e-liquid is included in the Aegis Max kit, which retails for between $50 and $70—that’s a steal. The mod and the tank are available separately as well, but either way, the price-to-performance proposition is incredible.

The Aegis Max kit rides the line between intermediate and advanced devices, but it does so with grace. For either market, neither gets in the way of the other. This is a perfect device to upgrade to from pod systems or starter kits or even from a similar intermediate device that uses an 18650 battery or internal battery. For advanced or enthusiast vapers, the Aegis Max doesn’t necessarily mean a step back.

While the battery life and power output can’t match that of a multi-battery mod, keep in mind that 200 watts is often overkill, and enthusiasts won’t be sacrificing too much for a top-tier setup that’s likely a bit smaller and more portable.

All in all, GeekVape has once again impressed with the Aegis Max kit and has set a new standard for quality, performance and value.

  • Nature of the Beast

    Nature of the Beast

The Gaur-21 provides all the expected features in a high-end device without a burdensome menu design.

    By Mike Huml

The Gaur-21 from Vandy Vape is a beast. There are no mincing words. It is a high-power series mod with the entire gamut of features expected from top-end devices. With design input from Matt from SMM, the Gaur-21 perfectly streamlines high-end vaping into a robust and straightforward experience at only a modest price point.

The Gaur-21 features three-button operation with a built-in menu system that is concise and intuitive, allowing each user to adjust settings quickly and easily with few ambiguous prompts. A standard 510 connection ensures compatibility with most any type of atomizer, including sub-ohm tanks and rebuildables. The mod itself is quite lightweight, but when batteries are installed, it can become weighty to the point that it feels solid but not cumbersome. While 18650 batteries can be used with the included adapters, the Gaur-21 truly shines when used with high-quality 21700 batteries. The battery door pulls off easily and is held in place with magnets, but the batteries can be charged within the mod via an included USB type-C cable.

Any vaping style is permitted with the Gaur-21, from low-wattage mouth-to-lung vaping to massive cloud-chucking lung hits. With a range of 5 watts to 200 watts, no atomizer is out of the question. Atomizers with resistances as low as 0.05 ohms can be used, and the mod supports an output current of up to 50 amps, so there is little need to worry about the mod limiting the output when low resistances are combined with high wattages. While pure power is certainly an attractive feature, temperature control is also perfectly viable as well, with a standard temperature range of 200 degrees Fahrenheit to 600 degrees Fahrenheit (100 degrees Celsius to 315 degrees Celsius).

The build quality is also something of note. The Gaur-21 has a rubberized finish on most of the exterior with portions of the battery door available in multiple colors and a more textured, rounded back for comfort. When assembled, there is absolutely no rattling, and there are no loose-feeling elements. Dust and excess e-liquid are easily cleaned from the rubberized surface, and fingerprints are a nonissue. In terms of pure aesthetic quality, there are no complaints.

The 510 connection is slightly off-center with airflow channels on the off chance that the connected atomizer receives airflow through its 510 connection. The asymmetry of this design favors finger firing rather than thumb firing, but both methods are equally comfortable. The screen lies on the atomizer side of the mod and is illuminated in full color, which not only looks nice but makes it much easier to distinguish between various screen and menu icons.

Three clicks of the fire button will allow for the selection of the firing mode—wattage, voltage, temperature control or bypass. Holding the fire button and the plus button will lock the device, and a separate option in the menu will determine whether this locking function will lock the device entirely or only the adjustment buttons. Holding the fire button and the minus button will flip the screen 180 degrees, a feature that will rarely see use. By pressing the plus and minus buttons twice in quick succession, one can activate a prompt to re-read the atomizer resistance. Holding the plus and minus buttons will enter the full menu screen for further customization.

Lastly, pressing all three buttons at the same time will activate or deactivate stealth mode, blacking out the screen but still allowing the device to function. Vandy Vape has not omitted any functionality, and these menu shortcuts allow quick and easy access to the most-used tools.

During and for a short time after use, the screen displays all the standard useful information one could want to know briefly. Current output setting, battery life on a per-battery basis, atomizer resistance, output voltage, puff count and vape time. When the menu shortcut is activated, a vertical list of icons appears, each corresponding to a set of features or options. These include output settings, standby sleep time, screen brightness, puff count reset, UI color, firmware version, a QR code to download the optional mobile app, temperature control options to adjust the cooling value and coefficient and a factory reset. These are mostly self-explanatory.

The temperature control settings allow TC aficionados the ability to really fine-tune the functionality to try and dial-in the perfect vape. The mobile app is handy for anyone who likes to tinker with their settings on a regular basis but finds the built-in system a bit too cumbersome. The first icon, settings, will be the most useful to most vapers.

Within the settings menu, the user can change which modes can be selected from the main screen. For example, if a particular vaper is partial to wattage vaping only, they can turn off temperature control, bypass and variable voltage mode entirely. These options will no longer be available from the main menu, which is great overall for simplifying.

Alternatively, if someone likes to switch between wattage mode and bypass mode, they can turn off temperature control mode and all its associated features to more easily switch between the modes that are most used. This is also the menu option that allows the user to dictate whether the lock function disables the fire button. Many mods have a lock function that prevents the device from firing, but this is in addition to the five-click on/off feature, which is also present in the Gaur-21. So instead of having two different ways to functionally turn the device “off,” the user can choose to lock the device at a certain wattage, voltage or temperature setting while still retaining the ability to fire the device.

The settings menu also allows the user to determine if new atomizers are automatically detected. Depending on the mode used, this can be useful for “locking” the atomizer resistance in place. Particularly in temperature control modes, this can ensure a more consistent vaping experience. Finally, the user can choose to have the mod disconnect from the mobile app automatically when the device is turned off.

In addition to adjustment functionality, the mobile app can also push firmware upgrades to the device, which is generally far easier than plugging it into a PC with a USB cable and upgrading through proprietary software or awkward button combinations. Most notably, the Gaur-21 app features a lost-and-found feature. If the mod is ever lost but is connected to the app, the user can use their phone to ping the mod, causing it to beep repeatedly until turned off. For anyone who has ever panicked over the prospect of losing their vape, this feature is a godsend.

The Gaur-21 provides all the features one would expect from a high-end device and then some, and it does so without overly burdensome menu features. In fact, one of the main features is to disable features that aren’t used in order to become even more straightforward! But a main feature that shouldn’t be overlooked is inherent to the nature of the mod, and that’s compatibility with 21700 batteries. 21700 batteries are truly a treat. With only a marginal size and weight increase over 18650 batteries, 21700 batteries have significantly more battery life and a consistently higher amp limit. That means safer batteries that last longer. High-quality 21700 batteries can easily achieve over 4,000 mAh and still retain a continuous discharge rate of over 30 amps.

That’s impressive even for a 26650 battery, which have generally fallen out of favor due to the extremely large size. Now, that performance can be had even in devices that aren’t necessarily larger than those that use 18650 batteries. For mouth-to-lung vapers, that means that 10 watts to 30 watts can be maintained for days without needing to charge the batteries, and for lung-hitters, higher wattages can be attained for longer periods of time with much less stress on the batteries.

Given that most multi-battery mods are on the larger side and focus on power and features over size and convenience, the benefits of 21700 batteries over 18650 batteries cannot be overstated. Advanced mods have always pushed 18650 batteries to the limit, and 21700 batteries offer some much-needed headroom with almost no downside.

The Gaur-21 doesn’t exactly reinvent the wheel, but it makes a strong case as a flagship mod targeted at intermediate to advanced vapers. Operation is simple yet exhaustive, catering to every vaping style. Build quality is fantastic with that sought after “tacticool” look, unapologetically inspired by the Aegis Legend, and the option to use 21700 batteries is a game-changer.

It may seem like a small thing, but for anyone who wants the benefits of a multiple-battery series box mod and isn’t phased by the larger size, 21700 batteries offer increased battery life, power and safety with virtually no negatives. The Gaur-21 is undoubtedly a mod worthy of the advanced, high-power mod throne in any product lineup, successfully capable of offering most any function to any vaper.

Rather than imposing new features into a familiar system, the SnowPlus line offers both new and improved and tried and true variants of the same system.

    By Mike Huml

As the popularity of pod-style vaporizers and e-cigarettes continues to rise despite regulation, many newcomers to the vapor industry are materializing. SnowPlus is one such company, with an offering of two different pod systems in the SnowPlus line. While similar, each system offers its own set of benefits and drawbacks, depending on personal preference. Both the SnowPlus Pro and SnowPlus Lite are outstanding examples of what a pod system should be, offering convenience and performance with minor tweaks to suit many types of vapers.

The SnowPlus line consists of the flagship SnowPlus Pro and the slightly smaller SnowPlus Lite. While the SnowPlus Lite represents the pinnacle of current vapor technology, the SnowPlus Pro pushes the boundaries with features like haptic feedback and fast USB Type-C charging. Both are compatible with all the pods that SnowPlus offers and are capable of standing on their own merit in terms of quality.

So, what makes them different? The SnowPlus Pro is generally more robust. It’s heavier, longer and has a larger battery capacity at 450 mAh. It features a “soft-touch” coating that feels somewhat like a hybrid of rubber and metal. It’s durable and able to withstand above-average wear and tear without so much as a scratch. It also features haptic feedback, with a quick vibration indicating that a new pod has been successfully installed. The SnowPlus Pro is also one of the only pod systems on the market to incorporate USB Type-C charging.

While this has been a common feature on mobile phones and other technologies for several years, the vapor industry always seems to lag a bit. Not only can the USB charger be inserted in either direction as the charging port and connector are symmetrical, but it can also charge a fully depleted battery to a full charge in under twenty minutes.

That’s impressive considering most pod systems still using micro-USB connections can take up to an hour to charge even with smaller battery capacity. This is a huge upgrade for anyone who’s ever had to charge their battery halfway through the day. A full charge can be achieved on a lunch break or during a daily commute—anywhere there is an open USB port to utilize. In terms of vaping quality, the SnowPlus Pro has a significantly more open airflow compared to the SnowPlus Lite but is otherwise very similar in terms of vapor production and throat hit.

The SnowPlus Lite doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that the SnowPlus Pro has, but what it lacks in cutting-edge technology, it makes up for with convenience and portability. That’s not to say that the SnowPlus Pro isn’t portable, but the SnowPlus Lite is naturally lighter, shorter and has a 400 mAh battery. The 50 mAh deficit in battery life is not particularly significant, but the weight surely is.

This variant is much more akin to other common pod systems, and this is due mainly to the use of aluminum rather than zinc in the manufacturing of the body. Rather than a soft-touch coating, the SnowPlus Lite features the more common anodized coating that’s found in many other vapor products.

The charging port utilizes a micro-USB connector, so charging times are more in line with what can already be found on the market. A full charge is expected to take between 45 minutes and one hour. Additionally, the haptic feedback is absent on the SnowPlus Lite, and the airflow is noticeably more restricted than the SnowPlus Pro.

As mentioned above, both models use the same pods, of which several varieties are available. All pods contain 1.5 mL of e-liquid, which is on the larger end of the spectrum when it comes to pod systems, and all are installed by easily sliding the pod into the top of the battery. A magnet holds the pod in place securely, and an LED on the battery activates to confirm that a connection has been made.

The classic pods are available in multiple flavors, with classic tobacco and mint available in 5 percent strength. Other fruity and beverage-type flavors are available in 3 percent strength, but that’s largely irrelevant now that these flavors are illegal to sell within the U.S. However, SnowPlus ships internationally from China, so the end user may still be able to purchase these flavors directly.

Unlike many other pod systems, SnowPlus also offers a nicotine-free line with extracted caffeine. These flavors are based on coffee, tea and other caffeinated beverages. While it’s refreshing to see a 0 percent option, it would be better if some were offered without nicotine or caffeine and particularly if a tobacco-flavored option was offered for the U.S. market. Again, at the time of this writing, direct ordering of nontobacco flavors is an option.

Finally, and perhaps most uniquely, is the “smokeless” line of pods. As any vaper knows, all vapor products are smokeless, but what SnowPlus is trying to imply is that these pods are vaporless, and yes, classic tobacco is an available flavor. These are available in a nicotine strength of 1.5 percent and are perfect for discreetly vaping in places where clouds of vapor would be irritating to others or inappropriate in general.

Historically, vaporless e-liquid is appealing to a very niche market, but the option is very much appreciated. Vaporless e-liquid is more often used by vapers as needed rather than being the primary preference, meaning that it can be appealing to every SnowPlus user but not for every situation. After all, much of the appeal of vaping stems from its similarity to smoking, and without vapor on the exhale, the experience can feel lacking.

Overall, the pod selection is vast, but filling out each line to include every nicotine strength in every flavor, including classic tobacco, would be a welcome improvement. Many pod systems simply do not offer a way to decrease nicotine consumption if the goal is to wean oneself off nicotine completely.

If SnowPlus even were to offer their classic pods in the four strengths already available—0 percent, 1.5 percent, 3 percent and 5 percent—this would offer a linear decrease in nicotine strength that isn’t generally seen in pod systems. Given this criticism, SnowPlus does seem to offer the most choices when it comes to nicotine strength compared to the competition, and if taken further, it could be a great model for other manufacturers of pod systems to follow.

When it comes to the actual vaping quality of the pods, SnowPlus is among the best. Each pod uses a ceramic heating element rather than the more traditional wick and wire. On paper, this produces a better throat hit and better nicotine absorption due to finer vapor particles. In practice, this isn’t very noticeable, and the true benefit to this wicking and heating system is consistency.

These pods do not leak or gurgle, and they produce consistent vapor from start to finish, which are perhaps the biggest benefits of ceramic. Remember, pod systems appeal to new users and nonenthusiasts because of their simplicity and effectiveness. Leaking or spitback are among the most common turnoffs for new vapers and can be the sole reason a person can’t stick with vaping. It’s a small thing, but the ramifications shouldn’t be discounted or underestimated.

The SnowPlus Pro offers an airier draw that allows for quick drags without sacrificing vapor production while the SnowPlus Lite features a tighter draw more reminiscent of a full-flavor analog cigarette. Both benefit from a quick primer puff to activate the automatic switch and make sure the heating element is producing vapor for the entirety of the drag.

As with any pod system, it takes a few drags to acclimate, but beyond that, the learning curve is nonexistent. The airflow is smooth, and the vapor is produced easily, but the difference in airflow between the SnowPlus Pro and SnowPlus Lite is significant, and each user will have his or her preference as to which is better.

Overall, both the SnowPlus Pro and SnowPlus Lite are great for what they are. The SnowPlus Lite plays it safe and doesn’t offer anything out of the ordinary but can hold its own against the best pod systems currently available. It’s familiar and appealing to anyone who is comfortable using a pod system.

The SnowPlus pro pushes some new technology, and while innovations like haptic feedback aren’t particularly useful (albeit new and interesting), USB Type-C charging is a minor godsend. As other technologies adopt USB Type-C, spare micro-USB cables are becoming rarer and rarer. It’s nice to be able to charge a pod battery and a cell phone with the same cable, not to mention the vastly improved charging time.

Rather than imposing new features into a familiar system, SnowPlus has simply offered both new and improved and tried and true variants of the same system, and it’s the smart play. New technology can appear to be gimmicky until widespread adoption takes place, but that should never stifle innovation.

The SnowPlus Pro and SnowPlus Lite are both worth carrying for this reason. Both are quality vapor products that have much to offer despite both the innovation and familiarity of the SnowPlus Pro and SnowPlus Lite, respectively. People are still in the market for new pod systems even with the restricted flavor availability, and now could be an opportune time to highlight quality and innovation to try to fill that void.

    Liquid Reviews – April 2020

It seems like everything is an unknown right now. When will things get back to normal? Is that even a possibility anymore? When it comes to the vapor industry, we aren’t even sure if the premarket tobacco product application (PMTA) due to be turned in to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on May 12 is going to stand. Surely, considering the situation, the FDA and the Maryland judge who set the deadline will allow more time for companies to comply. Numerous businesses have said they have already had to postpone some studies until after people can return to their jobs.

In this issue, we continue to (mostly) review e-liquid brands (maybe not the reviewed flavor) that we expect will file a PMTA. No matter what happens, vape shops are soon going to have to realize that once the PMTA deadline is enforced, there will be fewer e-liquid brands to choose from. There may also be fewer places to buy e-liquid. “Shop owners and manufacturers need to fight through these tough times,” said James Jarvis, a U.S. vape shop owner and president of the Ohio Vapor Technology Association. With any luck, the world returns to normal by next issue.

Philter Labs Gets $1 Million in Vapor Filter Funding

    Credit: PhilterLabs

Philter Labs, a San Diego-based technology company that produces micro-sized air filters to help reduce the impacts of secondhand smoke, announced it has received $1 million in new investments.

The capital will be used for research and development, building out an extensive product roadmap, and launching what the company says will be first-of-its-kind personal filtration products, according to an article on Benzinga.com.

This new round of funding brings Philter’s total to $3 million. Bravos Capital and Explorer Equity both participated in the effort.

Philter Lab’s patented zero-5 technology utilizes a five step filtration process that manipulates smoke and vapor at the molecular level to dissipate up to 97 percent of emissions and dissolve harmful particulates and pollutants. Also unique to Philter is it’s pocket-sized design, allowing for ease of use and portability.

For over 20 years, the team behind Philter has been working to solve major medical problems, and identify consumer-centric solutions for common issues. Philter also aims to help re-frame popular associations behind controversial human behaviors, according to the article.

Philter’s technology encourages consumers to practice responsible vaping and empowers them to protect those they love, and the environment, by drastically reducing harmful emissions and airborne contaminants. The company’s overarching mission is to change the way people perceive vaping tobacco and cannabis.

CEO Christos Nicolaidis told Benzinga the goal at Philter Labs is to eliminate the impacts of secondhand smoke and harmful emissions while empowering consumers to vape responsibly, according to the article.

“This new series of funding builds on our momentum and will allow us to expand on our scientific research and launch new innovative, cutting-edge filtration products,” Nicolaidis said. “We want to lead the charge on a cultural shift for cleaner air and a better environment — and hopefully change the way people vape for the better.”

  • Liquid Reviews – February 2020

    Liquid Reviews – February 2020

We attempt to review e-liquids and flavors where the companies that manufacture them are expected to submit a premarket tobacco product application (PMTA) with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The deadline is May 12. All products that do not file by the deadline must be removed from the market. It is impossible to know what flavors will have PMTAs filed because companies are keeping quiet about their overall intentions, but the companies reviewed did say these brands would file “some flavors.”

The FDA did not include disposable systems in its flavor ban that took effect Feb. 6. Since the exemption was announced, several disposable systems have come on the market. While technically illegal since they were not on the market prior to Aug. 8, 2016, they are expected to be allowed to remain on the market if a PMTA is filed by the deadline. In the next issue, we will review several disposable systems (unless additional action is taken by the FDA against the products) to help retailers better understand the brands available. Additionally, we made a mistake with the numbers for Fruitia brand e-liquid in the last issue and have printed the correct score.

  • Perfect Performance

    Perfect Performance

    Photos by Mike Huml
The Dyadic squonk mod allows all the conveniences of squonking with a minimal increase in overall size and bulk.

    By Mike Huml

The Dyadic squonk mod from Wotofo and Tony B. is a testament of functionality and simplicity. Wotofo is well known for creating simple, yet effective, vapor products, and the Dyadic continues this trend. In fact, the simplicity and common sense approach to the Dyadic yields a product that addresses many issues inherent to squonk mods. Paired with a quality atomizer such as the Rebirth RDA, the Dyadic is the best all-around squonk mod in its price range.

To paint a broad picture, the Dyadic is a dual-18650 squonk mod at its core. It’s designed for pure performance and convenience with minimal extra features and no unnecessary tech. In true Wotofo fashion, the Dyadic emphasizes functionality and performance first, and everything else is secondary.

Starting with aesthetics, Wotofo and Tony B. have found a happy medium between functionality and style. At first glance, the Dyadic can look burly and intimidating, but pictures don’t quite do it justice; it’s much more compact than it first appears. The Dyadic makes use of two removable plates that house the batteries and the squonk bottle. With a center-facing screen and if viewed only in a photo with no reference as to the size of the device, the Dyadic can look almost like two mods side by side. This betrays its true size as the Dyadic is no larger than an average dual-battery device.

The design of the Dyadic is much better suited to neutral colors, such as black, silver or gunmetal, as brighter colors tend to accentuate the boldness of the mod, giving it that toy-like appearance. Neutral colors provide a sleek and professional aesthetic that works extremely well. The color screen is minimalistic in a great way, remaining large and easy to read without drawing attention away from the rest of the device.

To the chagrin of some, the 510 connection is offset rather than centered. While this provides an arguably more comfortable vaping experience and a more pleasing aesthetic since many atomizers will fit flush to the side, it limits the number of atomizers than can be used while also being visually pleasing. Atomizers with a diameter of 24 mm are the ideal size, but one can get away with using 25 mm atomizers with nearly no overhang. Naturally, smaller atomizers will work as well, but atomizers larger than 25 mm will look flat-out ugly. As 24 mm and 25 mm atomizers have virtually become the new standards, only a few outlying products won’t suit the Dyadic.

Lastly, the fire button and adjustment buttons are located in the center of the large side of the device. This is better suited to vapers who are right-handed as the thumb naturally rests on the button while the remaining digits gravitate toward the squonk bottle. However, after minimal practice, southpaw and ambidextrous vapers can find comfort in the Dyadic as well. These small “complaints” are the price of functionality when it comes to the Dyadic as it seems as if convenience and performance were considered first and foremost, and the aesthetics were built around these features.

The major problem with squonk mods is the size versus power compromise. A squonk bottle takes up nearly the same space as a 18650 battery. As such, many manufacturers opt for a single 18650 battery design in order to keep the size akin to standard dual-18650 mods. The problem here is that squonk mods are exclusively for RDA use, and RDAs tend to be power hungry. A single battery may not be enough for many RDA users that use high wattages, and if it is, it won’t last for very long. Of course, the trade-off here is that one does not need to drip manually.

In a sense, the inconvenience of shorter battery life is made up for by the convenience of not having to drip, all the while still enjoying an authentic RDA vape experience. However, it’s safe to say that most vapers who use RDAs are considered enthusiasts, and it’s not unrealistic to expect many of those enthusiasts to vape at over 100 watts. This leads to the inevitable need for more batteries.

Other devices certainly exist that fill this need, but they are fairly rare and tend to be prohibitively expensive. The Dyadic also fills the need for a multi-battery squonk mod, and it happens to retail between $50 and $60. Likewise, most other dual-battery squonk devices are large to the point that they aren’t very well suited for portability and work better as a desk mod. However, one of the most attractive features of a squonk device is the ability to travel with it and not have to carry a bottle of juice around as well. Setting it on a desk and using it only when stationary diminishes the value of this convenience.

The bottle that’s integrated into the Dyadic is very flexible, so it won’t deform even after extended use. Squonk mods can be messy, but Wotofo has addressed this issue by incorporating a silicone plug into the “cap” of the bottle for filling. When removed, a large juice port is revealed, meaning vapers will not need to remove the entire bottle or fiddle with removing the cap in order to fill.

The Dyadic addresses all of the issues pertaining to squonk mods. It’s on the larger side in general but no more obtrusive than the average dual-battery mod. The battery placement, bottle/atomizer position and double-plated exoskeleton all serve to ensure that the Dyadic remains a suitable size while still offering up to 200 watts of power and allowing vapers to carry around a dripper with 8.5 mL of liquid in the squonk bottle. There really are no inherent negative aspects to this mod, although per each vaper’s personal preference, some of the aesthetics may not be ideal. Functionally, the Dyadic has no glaring flaws to speak of.

As for the menu system, this has been scaled back in the interest of simplicity and functionality as well. Five clicks of the fire button turn the device on or off while pressing both adjustment buttons simultaneously locks the keys, including the fire button. Pressing the fire button at the same time as the right side adjustment button cycles between three power modes: standard, powerful and powerful+. That’s all there is to it. There’s no temperature control, no memory settings, no power curves.

Again, Wotofo has always been focused on pure and simple performance, and the Dyadic does indeed perform. If the lack of temperature control seems like a huge negative, consider that this is a mod for RDAs, and many vapers who drip do not use temperature control. It’s fairer to consider the fact that for those who find the Dyadic appealing, less menu bloat is likely a positive.

The Dyadic was reviewed alongside the Rebirth RDA from Hellvape and Mike Vapes and is worth mentioning as it is one of the best RDAs on the market for both squonking and dripping. It’s a 24 mm RDA that works perfectly with the Dyadic. It utilizes a two post design that enables easy single-coil and dual-coil builds. Being that dual-coil builds are more difficult to set up with only two terminals, this RDA is best for advanced vapers, but intermediate vapers might consider the Rebirth as well for the great single-coil performance.

The top cap is a single piece of stainless steel that rotates to adjust airflow. The honeycomb airflow provides the smoothest airflow path possible, and the partially raised sides of the deck block the holes when the cap is rotated in order to fine-tune the amount of airflow. The airflow path is best described as “side-bottom” airflow with each airflow channel angled slightly upward to catch the vapor as it naturally rises from the coils.

The Rebirth is a jack-of-all-trades RDA. When dripping, overfilling can cause e-liquid to leak from the airflow holes. Since the airflow is angled upward, this means juice flows downward. Luckily, small overfills are forgivable as the surface tension prevents the juice from leaking out of the airflow holes, and airflow from the subsequent drag will pull that liquid back to the coil.

Squonking reduces the risk of leaking since each counter squonk sucks some of the excess juice back into the bottle. However, coils tend to rest high on the deck, meaning that squonking is unlikely to saturate the coils directly. Instead, as the liquid rises, it saturates the wick, and the user must wait a small amount of time before that liquid reaches the coil.

Overall, the Rebirth RDA is the best option for those who know what they like to drip but also want to try squonking. The vapor and flavor production of this RDA is stellar, and although both dripping and squonking have their drawbacks, no other RDA can do both so seamlessly while also offering a single-coil option with no compromise.

The Dyadic is the perfect dual-battery squonk mod. Each design aspect has a purpose, and it performs as well as a dual-battery mod should. It allows all the conveniences of squonking with a minimal increase in overall size and bulk and without sacrificing performance or power in any way. The cherry on top is the price point. At $50 to $60, it falls right in the sweet spot for dual-battery mods, and with only a minimal learning curve, a simple menu and a slick look, the Dyadic is perfect for first-time squonkers and enthusiasts alike.

The VOOM closed pod system may have the closest representation to the draw of an analog cigarette of any device on the market.

    By Mike Huml

The VOOM pod system from Voom Labs is a sleek and simple device for lovers of pod systems. When it comes to pod systems, less is more, and the VOOM keeps operation simple and performance impressive. With the current regulatory climate, many store owners are likely looking to shake up their pod system lineups, and the VOOM should be at the top of the list.

The starter kit comes with the body/battery, a charging cable and a single pod with a strength of 20 mg, or 2 percent, nicotine. Multiple colors are available, and replacement pod packs come in 10 different flavors to suit vapers with a myriad of preferences. These pod packs come in packs of three, and each pod comes prefilled with 1.2 mL of e-liquid. The battery is rated at 320 mAh and should last for the duration of one full pod.

The included proprietary charger uses friction and magnets to secure the battery when charging. This cable-free charger can be used with any USB port and most A/C adapters. The VOOM charges quickly, only requiring approximately one hour to charge from empty to full.

A small LED on the battery will indicate the charge level using varied colors. Green means the battery is fully charged, white indicates a charge greater than 70 percent, blue illuminates between 30 percent and 70 percent, and red warns that the charge is below 30 percent and that charging is required. The LED will also flash to indicate errors such as a short-circuit or a poor pod connection. However, being a pod system, these warnings are few and far between, and these errors generally indicate that the pod should be replaced.

The VOOM is a closed system, so refilling the pods is not possible. This maximizes convenience and simplicity but does limit options for vapers looking for more customization. Each pod uses a proprietary ceramic heating element, which ensures voluminous, satisfying vapor from beginning to end. There is no crackling or popping when the e-liquid is heated, resulting in nothing but a perfectly smooth draw.

Speaking of the draw, the VOOM may be the closest representation of an analog cigarette to date. The airflow is very restricted, resulting in a satisfying draw with rich flavor that doesn’t incorporate any harshness or spitback. Additionally, the soft plastic material and thin design work well for hands-free vaping. Although the body is made of metal, the overall device is light enough to carry between the lips or teeth, depending on personal preference.

The matte finish of the battery flows seamlessly into the soft plastic of the pod. The edges are rounded to maximize the ergonomic feel, and the overall impression of the VOOM is one of pure quality. The pod and battery share opposing diagonal slants where they connect, which ensures that the pod can only be inserted one way. Since many other pod systems don’t apply this restriction, one can only assume that this is for design purposes and doesn’t impact performance or safety in any meaningful way.

It does add a slight angular juxtaposition to the otherwise rounded and ergonomic design, which is subtle but appreciated. The only minor complaint is that there is no window to view the amount of remaining liquid. Once the pod is inserted, the entire e-liquid reservoir is hidden from view. The pod is held in place securely with magnets, so sliding the pod out to view the remaining liquid is quick and effortless.

As for flavor options, the VOOM lineup is a bit strange. There are 10 flavors to choose from: ice watermelon, ice mango, ice grape, ice strawberry, ice lemon, mint, shisha double apple, cigar, roasted coffee and butter tobacco. Out of these 10 flavors, seven of them involve mint or menthol (the shisha double apple also incorporates menthol), and two of them are variations of tobacco. That leaves only one flavor for vapers who don’t like menthol or tobacco flavors, and that’s roasted coffee. Menthol often works to increase the crispness of fruit flavors, but standard fruit flavors are far and away the most popular flavor profile among vapers, so it’s strange to see so much menthol within the flavor lineup.

Overall, the VOOM improves upon the traditional pod system design in terms of vape quality and feel while retaining the simplicity and convenience that makes them so popular. A starter kit retails at $34.99, and replacement pod packs run about $17 for a three-pack. At 1.2 mL per pod, each replacement pack is standard in terms of quantity versus price. Each pack is available in both the standard 20 mg nicotine strength as well as a 35 mg strength. While many pod system and nic-salt liquids are available in strengths of 50 mg or higher, now may be the right time to scale back to lower nicotine strengths.

Due to the heat that certain pod system manufacturers are currently facing, particularly when it comes to nicotine strength and how it relates to youth addiction, many feel that 50 mg is just too much nicotine. On the other hand, it’s not uncommon for heavy adult smokers to need this much nicotine if they hope to overcome the grip of smoking analog cigarettes.

There is no clear-cut correct answer, and each store owner is responsible for serving their customers in the best way possible. As such, the nicotine strengths available for the VOOM are perfectly reasonable, but if a store owner finds themselves with numerous customers who haven’t weaned themselves down from a 50 mg e-liquid, the VOOM may be a tough sell. However, it’s important to note that while the difference between 35 mg and 50 mg e-liquids seems very significant on paper, in practice, this shouldn’t be a huge hurdle to overcome. A 35 mg e-liquid is still very high and will likely satisfy the majority of the customer base.

However, for those concerned with extremely high nicotine strengths upward of 50 mg, the VOOM is the perfect pod system in terms of optics. Setting a self-imposed nicotine cap on available e-liquids can show that a store is taking responsibility and actively working to reduce nicotine addiction while still catering to its adult customer base. Each business owner will naturally decide what is best when it comes to available products and which policies to implement, but it should be noted that the VOOM offers a potential opportunity to address the current issues in vaping through action for stores that find it necessary.

It’s also no secret that pod systems and flavors available in convenience stores are under threat, meaning that dedicated vape shops should be gearing up to carry more of these pod systems and replacement pods for vapers alienated by regulation. Even the threat of regulation has prompted some pod system manufacturers to discontinue certain flavors or reevaluate where those flavors are sold.

While veteran vapers can currently still order online, many newer users (and particularly users of pod systems) are more comfortable purchasing from a physical location. By broadening a product line, a store can work to bolster its customer base but also prepare for the contingency of restricted online sales. Although the vapor industry has been in regulatory limbo for many years at this point, the call for regulation has now hit a fever pitch. Regulation is coming, and businesses most capable of adapting stand the best chance of weathering the storm. The VOOM is a great place to begin when reworking a product line with the expectation of garnering new customers.

As a product, the VOOM performs well among the best pod systems available but also comes along at a time when many are likely looking to adopt new pod systems. When making that switch, the VOOM offers the highest quality and an opportunity to address many of the issues pertaining to the vapor industry at large.

With vape shops rumored to be exempt from an impending restriction on certain products, nicotine strengths or flavors, Voom Labs is offering a great product at the ideal time. Although it’s like many other pod systems, now is not the time to reinvent the wheel. As product refinement continues, VOOM is offering exactly what is needed: a durable, quality product that won’t be easily replaced by similar products that can also serve to address some major issues pertaining to regulation and increase adaptability for a store’s product line.

The perfect vapor product is entirely subjective and may not exist at all. However, the VOOM may be the perfect pod system to consider right now. On its own, the VOOM is a fantastic product overall, but given all the outside factors, this could be one of the best additions to a store’s lineup to act as a response to impending regulation.

    Liquid Reviews – December 2019

We look back at the highest rated e-liquids from every issue of Vapor Voice in 2019. To date, we have never had an e-liquid score a perfect 10. Surprisingly, three of the Top 5 are strawberry flavored. It’s interesting considering the broad spectrum of flavors we tested this year. Fruit flavors are the most popular flavors for U.S. vapers, according to numerous studies.

U.S. smokers can still vape flavored vapor products, but that could change at any time as the industry awaits President Donald Trump’s stance on flavors. It may not matter, however, as premarket tobacco product applications are due to the Food and Drug Administration by May 12, 2020. There is also an election next year, and some congressional Democrats support legislation banning flavors.

We also review five very popular e-liquids in brick-and-mortar vape shops.

Readers are welcome to suggest e-liquids for review at editor@vaporvoicemagazine.com.
